After India played their first-ever day-night Test against Bangladesh and won it almost in two days, cricket experts and fans are looking forward to more. Challenges have already started coming in from Australia, the country to have played the most number of day-night Tests so far (five), inviting Virat Kohli’s side to play them with the pink ball. The proposal had come when India toured Australia last year but the BCCI did not accept it.
The new BCCI administration under president Sourav Ganguly though looks different in its approach. The idea has resurfaced once India made their debut with the pink ball and there are proposals that one of the matches in the Test series that India play Down Under between November 2020-January 2021 be under the lights. Among those who think it’s an exciting idea is former India opener Gautam Gambhir.
“I like the way Australia skipper Tim Paine has “flighted” one for India captain Virat Kohli, challenging him to play a day-night fixture on the next tour Down Under. Knowing Virat he is not the one to back out. And why should he? A day-night Test match between India and Australia at Brisbane or the MCG will be quite a spectacle,” Gambhir, an MP from East Delhi now, wrote in his column for Times of India.
Aussies will make it truly memorable
“And you can trust Aussies to make it a truly memorable game by some smart marketing. I haven’t seen Virat’s response for Paine but if I was him I would have straight away told him to make some late-night babysitting arrangements as we were ready,” Gambhir added.
Australia Test captain Tim Paine recently spoke over the idea of playing a day-night Test against India the next time the two teams meet Down Under. “We’ll ask Virat [Kohli] and see if we can get his permission to play here [Brisbane] and maybe even get a day-night Test if he is in a good mood. We’ll wait and see,” the Aussie wicket-keeper had said after his team thumped Pakistan in the first Test at the Gabba by an innings and five runs recently.
Paine became the first Australian captain to lose a Test series at home against India last year when Kohli’s men won a four-Test series 2-1.
