MS Dhoni, the veteran Indian cricketer, is known to possess a calm and composed demeanour. Because of his collected approach, he is also being called ‘Captain Cool’ by his fans. However, Gautam Gambhir, his former teammate, said that he has seen the Jharkhand-born getting carried by his emotions. The southpaw has played alongside Dhoni in 126 ODIs, 39 Tests and 37 T20Is.
Ever since he retired back in December 2018, the Delhi-born Gambhir has been pretty vocal about Dhoni and his style of captaincy. He said how Dhoni’s rotation policy in the 2012 tri-nation series in Australia didn’t make much of a sense Now, the 38-year-old left-handed revealed a few instances when the wicketkeeper was overawed by the heat of the moment.
It’s absolutely fair enough to do that: Gautam Gambhir
To start with, Gambhir said that Dhoni was unhappy during India’s horrendous campaign in the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies. In that tournament, the Men in Blue crashed out after the Group stage itself following defeats to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Apart from that he has seen Dhoni lose his cool, but reckons that the emotional outbursts are fair enough since Dhoni is human.
“People say that they have never seen MS Dhoni lose his cool, but I have on a couple of times. It was during the 2007 World Cup and in other World Cups when we haven’t done well. He’s human and he’s bound to react as well. It’s absolutely fair enough to do that,” Gambhir was quoted as saying on Star Sports show Cricket Connected.
But Gambhir accepted that he isn’t as calm as Dhoni. “Even at CSK, if there’s a mis-field or if someone has dropped a catch. Yes, he’s cool, he’s probably much cooler than the rest of the other captains. Much cooler than me for sure!” he added.
In the previous edition of the IPL, Dhoni couldn’t hold on to his anger during a match against the Rajasthan Royals at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. He wasn’t happy with the umpire revoking a no-ball call in the dying stages of the game.
Then he barged on to the ground and had a heated discussion with the umpires. He was thereafter fined 50 per cent of his match fees after he admitted to the offence of IPL’s Code of Conduct.
