Glenn Maxwell played an exceptional knock at the Adelaide Oval with the bat ripping apart Sri Lanka’s bowling. But little did anyone knew about the mental health he was suffering from. The same reason has led to the dynamic all-rounder from taking a short break from cricket. He has been withdrawn from Australia‘s T20I squad for the ongoing Sri Lanka series and will also miss the upcoming Pakistan series.
Cricket Australia (CA) announced Maxwell’s decision to take a break from the game on Thursday. CA’s Support Team psychologist Dr Michael Lloyd also confirmed the news stating that the 31-year-old has been experiencing mental health issues and it is only wise for him to spend some time away from the game.
“Glenn Maxwell has been experiencing some difficulties with regards to his mental health. As a result, he will spend a short time away from the game. Glenn was proactive in identifying these issues and engaging with support staff,” Lloyd was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.
D’Arcy Short replaces Maxwell in the T20I squad
CA’s Executive General Manager of National Teams Ben Oliver has said that Cricket Australia will fully support Glenn Maxwell during this period. He also urged the fans and followers to give the much-required space to the cricketer’s friends and family. “The well-being of our players and staff is paramount. Glenn has our full support.
“Cricket Australia will work collaboratively with Cricket Victoria’s support staff to ensure Glenn’s well-being and his reintegration into the game. We ask that everyone gives Glenn and his family and friends space; and respects their privacy at this time. He’s a special player and an important part of the Australian cricket family. We hope to see him back in the team during the summer. It’s important we look after Glenn and all our players,” he said.
Meanwhile, D’Arcy Short has replaced Glenn Maxwell in Australia T20I squad. The left-hander is expected to join the team on Friday after the match between Queensland and Western Australia. He will also stay with the team for the upcoming Pakistan T20Is.
