Claiming a hat-trick is a dream for any bowler. It is as difficult and rare occurrence as scoring a triple hundred for a batsman. Also, it is extremely tough to pick a hat-trick by dismissing the top-order batsmen and only a very few bowlers have managed to do it. Former Australia pacer Glenn McGrath did pick up a hat-trick against West Indies in December 2000.
He had dismissed Sherwin Campbell, Brian Lara and Jimmy Adams off consecutive deliveries to achieve the hat-trick. While dismissing a player of the stature of Lara during the hat-trick is a huge achievement for any bowler. McGrath was known for his accurate line and length throughout his career. But his concept of a dream hat-trick is different.
While speaking to ESPNCricinfo, the Australian legend was asked to pick three batsmen he would like to get out in his dream hat-trick. And Glenn McGrath went with Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Lara. The three batsmen seldom threw their wicket away during their illustrious careers and it was always a dream for any bowler to pick their wicket at lease once. The hat-trick wish-list would be Brian Lara, Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid,” he said.
Glenn McGrath laments not bowling at 100 mph in his career
Glenn McGrath donned the Australia jersey for 14 long years. He played 124 Test matches and 250 One-Day Internationals for his country and was the part of the dominating Aussie era in cricket. The pigeon went on pick 563 Test and 381 ODI wickets in his career and even in a couple of T20I he played, he went on to account for five scalps.
Such was his accuracy in bowling that the batsmen used to fall in the trap almost every time. But the 50-year-old always missed a specific trait in his armoury while bowling. Glenn McGrath was never a terrifying bowler in terms of speed. It was his nagging accuracy in line and length which made him the master of all but he laments the fact that he never bowled at 100 mph speed to instill that fear in the opposition batters.
