A lot of eyes were on Yuvraj Singh, who retired from international cricket a few months ago, in the second edition of the Global T20 Canada. The southpaw plied his trade for the Toronto Nationals in the opening match of the tournament versus defending champions Vancouver Knights. But at the CAA Centre Brampton in Ontario, he didn’t have the greatest of times by any means.
After the Nationals were sent in to bat, the ever so dynamic Yuvraj came to bat in the ninth over following the dismissal of Calum Macleod. However, he couldn’t get bat to ball and had to work hard for his runs. The bowlers didn’t bowl on the slot and the left-hander couldn’t find his timing. But the veteran was dismissed in a rather bizarre manner by medium-pacer Rizwan Cheema.
Replays made the revelations
Yuvraj could only manage 14 runs off 27 balls at an abysmal strike-rate of 51.85 and got out of Cheema. The southpaw found a thick edge to the keeper, who couldn’t latch on to the leather. But the ball deflected on to the stumps. On seeing the bails dislodged, Yuvraj didn’t hesitate to walk, thinking his painful vigil in the middle might have come to an end.
The dismissal wasn’t even sent upstairs to the third umpire since Yuvraj decided to walk. However, replays had something interesting to reveal. When the bails were taken off, Yuvraj’s backfoot was inside the batting crease, which suggested that he was not out. Unfortunately, the decision was already made and by the time the revelations came to the fore, Yuvraj was back into the dugout.
Kieron Pollard made his way following his dismissal. Yuvraj’s wicket turned out to be a blessing in disguise though as Pollard raced his way through to 30 off 13 with two fours and three sixes. At the other end, Heinrich Klaasen also unleashed his range of strokes with a 20-ball 41.
The Nationals eventually managed to set a target of 160 for the Knights, who chased it down with 16 deliveries to spare. Chadwick Walton (59) and Rassie van der Dussen (65) put on a second wicket-stand of 126 to help the Knights script a thunderous eight-wicket victory.
