Legendary Pakistan batsman Javed Miandad has revealed an interesting anecdote regarding the great Sir Viv Richards. The former West Indies skipper is regarded as one of the best batsmen to have graced the game. It would be nothing less than a bizarre if someone even remotely related to the game say that he or she has not heard of the great batsman.
Well, Richards came across a child who indeed did not know about him, recalled Miandad. But instead of telling the kid about himself, Richards replied to him in his unique style. Just like his batting, his reply was also full of swagger as the former batsman asked the kid to go to a library and find about him.
“Players don’t need to talk about their performances – when they perform well in the ground, then the whole world talks about you. Once a kid asked Viv Richards – who are you? He replied (don’t ask me) go to a library and find about me,” Miandad was quoted as saying by PakPassion.
How to deal with criticism?
More often than not, one comes across a statement from any player, saying that he does not pay heed to criticism. Most of the players, in fact, prefer to stay away from the newspapers and news outlets. However, Javed Miandad had a different rule. The Pakistan great said he read the newspapers when he was performing badly so that he could gauge public perception and also what the media was talking about him.
“When you wake up in the morning, read the newspapers to see what people are saying about you, and take that in a positive manner,” he said.
“When I performed well, I wouldn’t read the papers as I knew that they would say nice things about me. When you do badly is when you should read the papers to see what people are saying about you. And also how would your family feel if they read this opinion about you – this is what we used to look for,” he added.
