Comparisons between a newcomer and a legendary cricketer is nothing new in the game of cricket and India’s latest T20I player Shivam Dube could not evade those comparisons either. Even before he could set his foot on the field for his first-ever international game, he was compared to none other than Yuvraj Singh who is arguably India’s greatest match-winner in limited-overs cricket.
The comparisons came thick and fast as soon as BCCI posted a video of Dube’s batting practice in nets on Twitter. Dube’s stroke-making compelled the fans to compare him with Yuvraj who was known for his stylish hits. Moreover, just like Yuvraj, Dube is also known for clearing the boundaries with ease. He has already hit five sixes off five balls in Ranji Trophy.
It would be interesting to see how Dube’s career pans out and whether he manages to justify the comparisons with the former India cricketer. However, Yuvraj himself is of the opinion that this is not the right time to make such comparisons. Yuvraj reckoned that Dube is just starting his career and should be given the breathing space.
“Let the guy start his career first, and after a while when he reaches a certain level, then you start comparing him with someone. I don’t think he should be compared to me. He should make his own name. He has the talent,” Yuvraj said as quoted by India Today.
A poor start to Shivam Dube’s intl career
Shivam Dube, nonetheless, had a debut to forget in international cricket. The Mumbai star was given his maiden T20I cap before the first game against Bangladesh in Delhi. He, however, could not make much of an impression. With the bat, he managed just 1 run from four balls. Dube had the chance to become a hero with the ball when he was asked to defend 4 in the final over but he could not.
With Hardik Pandya not in the team right now due to an injury, Dube is looking set to play the second game too. India will lock horns against Bangladesh in the crucial clash on Thursday in Rajkot. The Men in Blue will have to win the game at any cost to keep the three-match series alive. Bangladesh are currently leading the series after stunning India by seven wickets in the series-opener.
