Ireland, on Tuesday, July 13, scripted history as they beat South Africa for the first time in ODIs. They won by 43 runs at The Village in Dublin after bowling the opposition out for 247. Moreover, Andrew Balbirnie and Co broke into the top five of points table in the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League. It was Ireland’s third win in the championship out of 11 matches thus far.
After being put in to bat first, Ireland put up a massive score of 290 for the loss of five wickets in 50 overs. Balbirnie notched 102 off 117 balls with 10 fours and two sixes. Harry Tector lent him support with a 68-ball 79. George Dockrell also played a cameo of 45 off 23 balls to propel Ireland’s score.
In the run-chase, Janneman Malan scored 84 runs and Rassie van der Dussen racked up 49 runs. However, their efforts went in vain as the other batters flattered to deceive. In the meantime, South Africa are languishing at 11th in the Super League points table with one victory from five matches.

It’s a huge day for Ireland: Andrew Balbirnie
After the loss, Proteas’ skipper Temba Bavuma said that his team was outplayed in all three departments of the game. Balbirnie, on the other hand, was over the moon going by his team’s performance.
“They outplayed us in all facets. Their fielding was impressive. They nailed their batting and bowling skills too, and we need to do a lot of work. The plan for us in the first PP was taking wickets and we couldn’t do so. We created chances but our fielding let us down.
“Momentum was on their side and we couldn’t get any on our side. No partnerships for us either, other than Rassie and Malan, and a lot of conversations need to happen and need to translate to execution on the field,” Bavuma said after the match.
“The way our guys bowled at the death and the middle was amazing. It was a win that we really needed. I thought we outfielded them today, which made the difference. Tector’s freedom while batting was match-winning. We’ll enjoy this – it’s the first time we have beaten them and it’s a huge day for Ireland,” Balbirnie said.
