The way India-South Africa rivalry evolved in the last decade, not many would have expected such a one-sided contest in the ongoing series. Barring the first innings of the first Test, South Africa did not pose any sort of challenge to India. In the just-concluded second Test, India more or less toyed with their opponents.
The hosts thrashed the visitors by an innings and 137 runs to register their biggest Test win over the Proteas. With the win, India also clinched the three-match series in addition to reclaimed the Gandhi-Mandela Trophy. Almost everything has gone India’s way in the series as the hosts avenged their loss to the Proteas last year.
Batting first, India piled up a gigantic total of 601 for 5 before declaring. Unlike their South African counterparts, the Indian bowlers then showed how to bowl on subcontinental pitches by bowling out the Faf du Plessis-led side for just 275 on day three. On day four, India became the first team since 2008 to ask South Africa to follow-on.
In reply, South Africa were all out for a paltry 189. Their top-order once again failed to deliver as India dismissed half of the team for just 79. The lower-order then delayed the inevitable for a while before India completed the proceedings soon after tea. The third and final Test of the series will take place in Ranchi.
Anand Mahindra in a dilemma
Anand Mahindra, the chairman of the Mahindra Group, meanwhile, is in dilemma after India’s win. An avid cricket lover, Mr Mahindra took to Twitter to reveal his dilemma after the Virat Kohli-led side blew away the Proteas. While he was all praise for Team India, he said that he could not decide over whether he prefers such dominating win or close nail-biting games.
“Bravo Team India. But I’m a bit unsure whether I prefer such dominance & such fluent victories or instead would like to see dramatic, nail-biting finishes! My ‘Dharma Sankat’,” wrote Anand Mahindra.
