Faf du Plessis has been an inspirational figure in the South African cricket. The man has been a prolific run-getter for the team and also been really on point with his skills as a captain. However, since the disastrous World Cup campaign last year, there were speculations that he could be removed as the captain.
Finally, he resigned from Test captaincy while Quinton de Kock was called in as the ODI captain. Recently, in an interview, the batsman revealed his plans in international cricket.
Faf du Plessis said that loves playing for the South African national side and he still sees himself as someone who can add huge value to the side. He also said that he wants to play in all three formats of the game.
‘I still see myself adding huge value’: Faf du Plessis
“I still love playing for the Proteas. I still see myself adding huge value. I am extremely motivated and keen to play in all three formats. This time away from the game has made sure that the hunger is still there for me and that is a big thing for players, to really still love what you do”, du Plessis said in an interview released by Cricket South Africa (CSA).
Talking about his captaincy role, the former skipper said he sees himself as a leader before a player. The 35-year-old said that he will miss captaincy but he thinks its time for him to help someone else get the nuances of the skill.
“I love captaincy, it is a part of who I am. I have captained since the age of 13. I still look at myself as a leader before a player, so I enjoy that more than anything else. I will always miss it, but I do think that the time has come for me to move on to a position of growing other leaders, something that I feel is lacking in our system”, du Plessis added.
The right-handed batsman went on say that it would be great to create a leadership group which can drive the South African cricket forward. He said he wants to create his own value to help other teammates.
“I want to make sure I can create some sort of value towards that, helping guys with someone who is there to guide them and, if they want to, to have someone they can talk to within the team. It is a great opportunity for five or six guys to come together and create a leadership group in the Proteas that will drive the culture for the next four or five years.”
