The International Cricket Council, known for its witty Tweets, recently tweeted a meme through its Twitter handle, which had a picture of the Australian batsman Marnus Labuschagne marked as the duplicate of Steve Smith. After Labuschagne’s series of good performances, when he came into the Australian team as Steve Smith’s replacement, the cricketing community had started drawing comparisons between the two talented batsmen.
Also, the fact that Labuschagne has a face similar to Smith’s, added fuel to the fire. On social media, a challenge called the ‘LinkedIn Facebook Instagram Tinder’ challenge has been trending for a couple of weeks. The ICC, joining the bandwagon of the memers, who are a part of this, had put out the meme in focus.
The picture, that was a collage of Steve Smith’s pictures, had his picture only on the LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram parts, but in the part where Tinder had to be, there was Labuschagne’s picture, with duplicate account written over it. The picture got a boatload of reactions from the fans. While most of them were seen having a ball on the microblogging platform, giving their own funny replies, there was a group calling Labuschagne the next Steve Smith.
Steve Smith considers Marnus Labuschagne to be ready for T20 cricket
Labuschagne has the potential to make it big on the international stage. And, his performance in the Ashes series, and the Test matches against Pakistan and New Zealand at home are a proof of this claim. While it would be too early to call him Smith’s replacement, because Smith is currently well far off from announcing his retirement or experience a dip in form, pushing him out of the team, it is definitely possible that the captain slots in both of them in the XI. And, if that happens, it should come as a surprise to no one that Australia starts posting 350+ totals in literally every match they play.
Both Smith and Labushagne are currently playing in the Big Bash League. In the 2019-20 season, Smith made a return to the tournament after six years, playing for the Sydney Sixers, while Labuschagne, who was recently hailed to be ready for the shortest format of the game, is representing the Brisbane Heat.
