Three matches took place on Friday in the U19 World Cup in South Africa. In Group C, Bangladesh managed to end as the toppers. Rain played spoilsport after the Junior Tigers were reduced to 106 for nine at the Senwes Park in Potchefstroom. Pakistan ended second on the table and would now be facing Afghanistan in the Super League quarter-final on next Friday at the Willowmoore Park.
On the other hand, Bangladesh are awaiting the winner of the match between the UAE and South Africa. If rain doesn’t allow play on Saturday, then the Proteas will be progressing to the next round on account of having a superior net run rate. In Group D, Afghanistan’s match against Canada got washed off without a ball being bowled. Farhan Zakhil’s men ended the group at the helm.
India thump New Zealand
The only match that produced a result on the day was the one between India and New Zealand at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein. After being put in to bat first, the Boys in Blue started in a positive manner. Both their openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Divyansh Saxena got to their fifties. But with the score at 115 for no loss in 23 overs, the heavens opened up in a severe manner.
The Duckworth Lewis Stern (DLS) method was applied and the game was reduced to 23 overs per side. The Black Caps were set a revised target of 192 from 23 overs. Their openers, Rhys Mariu and Ollie White set the tone with a stand of 53 runs for the opening wicket off 33 balls. Even after White got out, Mariu kept going after the bowling. But after Mariu was dismissed, things went downhill.
Fergus Lellman fought hard with a 19-ball 31, but didn’t get support from the middle-order. In the end, New Zealand were shot out for 147 in a mere 21 overs. Even as the pacers went for runs, the spinners kept a check on the scoring. Ravi Bishnoi carried on with his good form, picking four wickets in his five overs. Left-arm spinner Atharva Ankolekar churned out three wickets as well.
