Both England and New Zealand strained every muscle at the Lord’s- The Home of Cricket. The 2019 World Cup final wasn’t short of excitement and went right down to the wire. Following a number of twists and turns, the game of cricket was the winner. But the cruelty of the game meant that there had to be a winner. In the end, the Brits prevailed in the Super Over and the Kiwis had to leave heartbroken.
Black Caps crawl to respectability
After all the encounters in the league stage at the Lord’s went against the chasing teams, it wasn’t surprising that the Kiwis elected to bat first. Martin Guptill (19) threatened for a while but was trapped in front by Chris Woakes. Henry Nicholls (55) showed application and also stitched together a stand of 74 with Kane Williamson (30). With the partnership flourishing, Liam Plunkett got rid of both the set batsmen.
Ross Taylor (15) got out after Mark Wood caught him in front. But replays showed that the ball would’ve missed the stumps and the Kiwis had already used up their DRS. Tom Latham (47) looked fluent and he helped his team post a score of 241 on the board. James Neesham (19) and Colin de Grandhomme (16) also made useful contributions. For England, Woakes and Plunkett ended with three wickets each.
Stokes and Buttler try their hearts out
The Brits stuttered in the first-half of the run-chase. Jason Roy (17) succumbed to a rare failure as Matt Henry drew first blood. Joe Root (7) had a painful stint in the middle, facing 30 balls, before finding the outside-edge off Grandhomme. Jonny Bairstow (36) hit seven fours to get going, but Lockie Ferguson disturbed his timber off an inside edge. Then Neesham got rid of Morgan (7) with the score at 86.
Ben Stokes (84) and Jos Buttler (59) took charge and steadied the ship. Buttler was the aggressor in the stand and he got to his fifty off 53 balls and Ferguson cut short his knock. It brought to end a 110-run stand. In the last three overs, the hosts needed 34 runs. Woakes and Archer also couldn’t survive. Stokes had a chance to be a hero with 15 runs needed. He scored 14 and took the game down to the super over.
England selected Buttler and Stokes with Boult in the attack. With a boundary each from Stokes and Buttler and some impressive running between the wickets, the duo got 15 runs. Guptill and Neesham came out and Archer had the leather in hand. Neesham deposited Archer for a six, but Archer held his nerve and took England over the line. The Super Over was tied and the hosts won on account of hitting more boundaries.
