Over the last few days, there has been a lot of commotion after Prithvi Shaw was handed over the backdated eight-month suspension. The youngster was found guilty of ingesting a prohibited substance, Terbutaline, which is generally found in cough syrups. The 19-year-old’s ban was stated to have started from March 16, 2019, and will continue until November 15, 2019.
Recently, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released a timeline where it was seen that there was a gap of over two months between Shaw’s urine sample submission and the National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL) report. Even as Shaw gave the sample on February 22 during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, the results came on May 2. Even a reminder was sent on April 5.
India players to be tested by NADA
In between, Shaw took part in the IPL and the T20 Mumbai League. The Thane-born batter also trained at the National Cricket Academy during this while. Following all the chaos, it has been learned that the BCCI will now come under the ambit of the National Anti-Doping Agency. It means that Team India player will now be tested by the NADA as per reports in India Today.
For a long period of time, the BCCI has tried and avoided making using of NADA to test its cricketers. The same was because the Indian cricket board felt that it was not impressed with the efficiencies of the NADA. But Indian cricket is now set to undergo a significant change.
“If we would have been happy with NADA’s performance then BCCI would not have had an issue. I am sure you have read reports as well about NADA’s inefficiencies,” Abhijit Salvi, the BCCI anti-doping manager, was quoted as saying earlier.
Meanwhile, RS Julaniya, the Sports Secretary, said that the world’s richest cricket board doesn’t have the discretion of saying any from now onwards. “BCCI does not have the discretion to say no. All are same, everyone has to follow the same rule,” he said.
As far as Shaw is concerned, he is now set to miss the home series versus South Africa and Bangladesh. After getting meted out with the ban, he was disappointed and asked the youngsters to be cautious, releasing a statement.
