India was going great guns in the 2019 World Cup until their semi-final against New Zealand. Virat Kohli’s men lost by 18 runs and crashed out of the tournament. The team is set to undergo a few changes. Ravi Shastri and the rest of the support staff will have to reapply for their positions in the Indian team. The deadline of application for the same is on July 30.
Shastri and his staff have gotten an extension of 45 days. India is set to tour the West Indies for a one-month affair after which the recruitment will be made. A number of popular figures like Jonty Rhodes, Mike Hesson, Tom Moody and Mahela Jayawardena have reportedly sent in applications.
‘You got to transport yourself mentally into the game’
Former Indian cricketer Robin Singh also threw his hat in the ring for the high-profile head coach’s role. After applying for the position, he made a bold statement about Shastri and how the current Indian coach has fared under him in the knock-out stages of the tournaments, hosted by the ICC.
“Under the current coach, India has lost in the semi-finals of two successive ODI World Cups, and in the last four stage of the World Twenty20 championship as well,” the 55-year-old Singh was quoted as saying in Times Now.
Singh also talked about the importance of reading into the player’s thoughts and formulating tactics as per that. The veteran feels that it’s essential for a coach to put himself/herself in the player’s shoes in order to understand the game better.
“You got to transport yourself mentally into the game, put yourself in situations that the team and the players face, be a part of the moves, get into the players’ mind. You can do this, only if you understand the game technically,” he added.
Singh was known for his incredible fielding abilities during his playing days. He has coached the India U19 and A sides, and enjoyed a successful stint with the Mumbai Indians in the IPL. Singh has also been with the Barbados Tridents in the Caribbean Premier League.
