The Australian cricket team managed to take an edge over India after the completion of Day 1 of the third Test of the four-match Border Gavaskar Trophy at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The Australian batters came up with a better performance at the SCG as the debutant Will Pucovski looked impressive while Marnus Labuschagne was also at his fluent best.
Entering the contest, Australia had made some significant changes in their playing XI by including David Warner and the newcomer Pucovski as the openers of the team. Many were unsure about Will’s position in the team as Matthew Wade had done a good job for the hosts as the opening batsman in the first two Tests.
However, Will managed to prove his mettle in the purest format of the game as he smashed a scintillating half-century in his debut game. The batsman played a remarkable knock of 62 runs before getting out on the delivery by another debutant Navdeep Saini to give the hosts a decent start in the third Test.
The youngster was backed with massive luck too as the Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant dropped him twice, once off Ravi Ashwin and then off Mohammed Siraj, much to the agony of the visitors.
Wasim Jaffer opines on the batting technique of Will Pucovski
While Will was hailed by many for his classy knock in his debut game, former Indian cricketer and the batting coach of the IPL franchise Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) Wasim Jaffer pointed out a major flaw in the technique of the 22-year-old.
Jaffer believes that Pucovski exposes the middle stump to the bowlers and thus India should continue bowling at the stumps to him and take advantage of his movement across the crease.
“Pucovski goes so far across that even the middle stump is exposed. India should continue to bowl in the stumps to him with the leg-side field just need one to Jag back and hit the pad. Also, a Leg stump Yorker won’t be a bad option,” Jaffer tweeted.

At the end of Day 1 at Sydney Cricket Ground, Australia are looking strong at a score of 166 for 2. Marnus Labuschagne looks in good touch as he is playing at 67 for 149 deliveries and will be looking forward to completing his century while Steve Smith also has 33 runs to his name.
