Cricket South Africa (CSA), on Tuesday, announced the Test and T20I squads for their upcoming India tour. The Proteas are scheduled to play three T20Is and as many Tests against the Virat Kohli-led side from September 15. Quinton de Kock was named the captain of the T20 team while Faf du Plessis will continue to be at the helm for South Africa in the Tests.
The selectors picked three uncapped players for the tussle in the shortest format. Temba Bavuma, Bjorn Fortuin and Anrich Nortje were picked for the first time to play in the T20 Internationals. However, Dale Steyn’s name went missing in the squad after the veteran retired from the Test format earlier this month. The pacer had made clear that he will be available to play the shorter formats. Indirectly he had expressed his wish to play in the T20 World Cup next year to be held in Australia.
Steyn was injured ahead of the World Cup while playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and despite his injury, was picked in the squad for the mega event. But he sustained another injury in the middle of the tournament and was ruled out without playing any game.
It seems they lost my number
Dale Steyn was expecting to get picked it seems for the T20I series against India. But he wasn’t selected even as the selectors went for three new names keeping an eye on the World Cup next year. Moreover, it has also been revealed that Chris Morris made himself unavailable for the tour which one of the Twitter users highlighted on his handle.
Steyn obviously hurt on being ignored, responded to the tweet stating that he had made himself available for selection. He also wittily said that the selectors missed his number while giving more attention to picking the coaching staff. Ottis Gibson left the head coach job post the World Cup 2019 and the CSA is now looking for an entirely new coaching staff ahead of the India tour.
“I did… Obviously lost my number in the reshuffling of the coaching staff,” Steyn wrote in his tweet taking an indirect dig at the selectors.
Here’s the thread of the convo:
Interesting 'footnote' at the end of CSA's squad announcement for T20Is and Tests vs India… "Chris Morris did not make himself available for selection."
