The India-South Africa T20I series finally got underway with the second match which was played in Mohali at the PCA IS Bindra Stadium. The first match that was scheduled at HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala was washed out without the toss. This was also the first time that Quinton de Kock was leading South Africa in a full capacity in a series.
South Africa was put in to bat by Virat Kohli after winning the toss. The Proteas handed T20I debuts to Temba Bavuma, Bjorn Fortuin, and Anrich Nortje. Quinton de Kock felt at home in the Mohali ground given his extensive IPL experience and decided to go after the bowlers from the start, while at the other end, Reeza Hendricks was struggling a lot and finally fell to Chahar, caught by Sundar for 6 runs off 11 balls.
De Kock walks back after scoring a half-century
De Kock welcomed Navdeep Saini to the fold with three consecutive fours in one over. Kohli was starting to get frustrated as his counterpart and Bavuma started to build a neat little partnership. The break finally came in the 13th over, when Saini got the South African skipper to play a false shot off a shortish delivery.
Virat Kohli, who was positioned at mid-off, had to move quite a few paces to his left to pull off the catch. The Men in Blue skipper covered the distance in quick time, stretched both hands and plucked it with his left one ensuring the ball didn’t pop out from his hands. The catch was enough to set the crowd roaring as Mohali applauded the magnificent effort.
As far as the match is concerned, South Africa didn’t get the required final push as India restricted them to 149 runs after 20 overs. In response, Virat Kohli once again led from the front in the chase and remained unbeaten on 72 off just 52 deliveries with four fours and three maximums as the hosts sealed the chase with an over to spare. Shikhar Dhawan supported him well who also got out to a brilliant catch by David Miller.
