The cricketing world witnessed yet another batting masterclass from Virat Kohli as the India captain led from the front in his side’s stunning six-wicket win over West Indies in the first T20I on Friday. Things were not looking promising for the hosts when the reigning T20 world champions finished their innings on a huge total of 207 for 5.
And when Rohit Sharma was sent back by Khary Pierre for just 8, India’s chances started looking bleak. Kohli was not looking in good touch either as the world number one Test and ODI batsman played second fiddle to opener KL Rahul. But Kohli made sure not to throw away his wicket and it did not take him long to regain his touch.
After Rahul departed for 62, Virat Kohli turned on the heat and there was absolutely no looking back since then. Once he hit Jason Holder for a six to complete his fifty in the 15th over, the 31-year-old shifted gears and took the West Indies bowlers to the cleaners. He eventually scored his career-best 94 not out off just 50 balls as India chased down the total with eight balls remaining.
Virat Kohli stole the show
Virat Kohli’s stunning knock was studded with six fours and six sixes and the best of the lot was the six he hit off Kesrick Williams in the 16th over. Williams missed his yorker by just a few inches and it was enough for Virat Kohli’s wrists to send the ball over the ropes at cow corner. He just nonchalantly flicked the ball which went into the stands over wide ling-on. The shot was definitely the best of the night as Kohli left everyone in awe of his class.
The drama that followed the stunning six perhaps took the focus off that shot. As soon as Kohli launched the ball outside the boundary ropes, he mocked the West Indies pacer by doing that latter’s trademark notebook celebration. Meanwhile, after the game ended, Kohli revealed the reason behind his celebration following the six in the 16th over. Kohli said that he just took revenge for the send-off given by Williams to him during a T20I in 2017.
