West Indies have been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate against India in the first ODI match in Chennai on Sunday. David Boon of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the fine after Kieron Pollard’s side was ruled to be four overs short of its target after time allowances were taken into consideration.
In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20% of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time. As such, the team have each been fined 80% of their match fee.
Kieron Pollard pleaded guilty to the offence after the end of the match and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing. On-field umpires Nitin Menon and Shaun George, third umpire Rodney Tucker and fourth umpire Anil Chaudhary levelled the charge.
West Indies stun India at the Chepauk
The visitors, however, put up an exceptional performance on the field. They first restricted the much-famed Indian batting line-up to less than 300. Having said that, 287 looked a daunting score at the halfway mark as many hoped for the pitch to break up and help the spinners.
But that wasn’t the case. Rather batting became relatively easy under the lights and Shimron Hetmyer, along with Shai Hope, took full advantage of the same. Both the batsmen notched up scintillating centuries to leave the hosts helpless. West Indies chased down the target in the 48th over of the innings itself with as many as eight wickets in hand.
The second ODI is set to be played in Visakhapatnam which will also be a must-win encounter for Men in Blue. It will be interesting to see if India make any changes to their line-up while the Men in Maroon will look to seal the series with a match to go.
