The Indian Space and Research Organisation (ISRO) have successfully launched the Chandrayaan-2, adding another feather to its already full cap of accomplishments. The launch was done from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh at Monday at 2.43 pm on July 22.
The launch was expected to happen a week ago, but a technical snag kept the launch from happening. Now with the success, India becomes the fourth nation after the USA, the USSR and China to have a soft landing on the Moon.
“Chandrayaan 2 is an Indian lunar mission that will boldly go where no country has ever gone before — the Moon’s south polar region. Through this effort, the aim is to improve our understanding of the Moon — discoveries that will benefit India and humanity as a whole. These insights and experiences aim at a paradigm shift in how lunar expeditions are approached for years to come — propelling further voyages into the farthest frontiers,” ISRO was quoted in their statement.
The prime objective of the mission is to map the location and abundance of lunar water. Chandrayaan-2 was launched using the 640-tonne rocket Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-Mark III (GSLV-Mk III). Measuring 44 metres in height, the launcher of Chandrayaan-2 was called ‘Bahubali’. And the module consists of a rover, lunar orbiter and lander.
The ‘Vikram’ lander is expected to touch down on Moon on September 6-7 despite the number of days of the mission been curtailed from 54 days to 48 days. The moment was a glorifying one for every Indian, as India has truly become a country with one of the best space programs.
The social media was filled with congratulatory posts from the PM to the common man. The Indian PM Narendra Modi praised the scientists and everyone involved with the lunar mission and tweeted, “Special moments that will be etched in the annals of our glorious history! The launch of #Chandrayaan2 illustrates the prowess of our scientists and the determination of 130 crore Indians to scale new frontiers of science. Every Indian is immensely proud today!”

I always looked up at the moon as a child, wondering what secrets it's hiding.
