Over the time being, there have been constant debates on whether MS Dhoni, the veteran Indian cricketer, should hang his boots or not. He has blown hot and cold in recent times and was inconsistent even in the 2019 World Cup. After the mega event, Dhoni took a break from cricket and served the Indian Army. He didn’t play the T20I and ODI series versus the Windies.
About his retirement, Keshav Banerjee, Dhoni’s childhood coach, said that the latter can play until the 2020 T20 World Cup in Australia, scheduled to be played in October next year. India are set to play three T20Is versus South Africa next month and it’s not known whether Dhoni will play or not.
Sehwag asks the selectors to communicate
In the meantime, amidst all the speculations and talks surrounding Dhoni’s retirement, Virender Sehwag had a word on the matter. As per Sehwag, retirement is completely Dhoni’s personal call. However, he also asked the selectors to communicate their plans regarding him in the future.
“That [retirement] is Dhoni’s personal call. If he thinks he is fit and can contribute like he used to, then why not continue. But if the selectors think that MSD can’t contribute, then they should tell him that we are giving you this last series. That should be communicated,” the former Indian cricketer was quoted as saying in Hindustan Times.
Earlier, MSK Prasad, the chairman of selectors, said that Dhoni won’t be India’s first-choice keeper from now onwards. But Sehwag believes that if two keepers are selected for a tour, then Dhoni invariably comes into the picture. Moreover, Sehwag feels that Dhoni should ask the selectors for a retirement match when he does feel that it’s time to bid adieu to the sport.
“That communication should always be there between the selectors and the player. Don’t know whether the selectors have [that communication] or not. We have only read MSK [Prasad] giving a statement about selectors conveying to MSD that he is not their first choice.”
“So, that means they’ll pick Pant first and then if they have to pick a second keeper, they’ll pick Dhoni. That is not possible. After a time, Dhoni should decide and speak to selectors and ask for a retirement game. That is when he feels it is the right time to quit,” he added.
