Former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq has decided to step down as the chief selector of his country’s cricket team. After the Men in Green failed to win their last few bilateral series besides ending short of the knock-out phase in the recent cricket World Cup, the Pakistan Cricket Board decided against renewing Inzamam’s contract and he took the decision not to continue either. Inzamam took the charge as the chief selector in August 2016 following his coaching stint with Afghanistan.
Recently, it was revealed that Inzamam received 1.2 million Pakistan rupees (INR 5.1 lakh) a month while serving as the chief selector. As per Daily Express which was quoted by cricketpakistan.com.pk, Inzamam received over a staggering 60 million Pakistan Rupees (INR 2.59 crore) in his first three years as the chief selector.
As per the contract, the former cricketer was given a 25 per cent bonus for a series win and 100 per cent bonus if Pakistan had won an International Cricket Council (ICC) event. Pakistan had won the 2017 Champions Trophy that saw the ex-cricketer, one of the best batsmen Pakistan has produced, bagging 1o million Pakistan Rupees (INR 43.2 lakh) from the government.
Inzamam’s chances of bagging another reward at World Cup were dashed
However, Inzamam’s chances of bagging another major reward were dashed after Pakistan fell short of the semi-final berth in the 2019 World Cup. Sarfaraz Ahmed’s side had a horrendous start to the tournament by losing their first game against the West Indies by 7 wickets. They could win only one of their first five games and lost three while one was washed out.
They then made a strong comeback by winning four consecutive games against South Africa, New Zealand, Afghanistan and Bangladesh to finish at 11 points with the Black Caps. However, it was an inferior net run-rate that saw them crashing out of the tournament. England’s wins over India and New Zealand in their final two league games also hurt them big.
Pakistan lost their bilateral series against South Africa, Australia and England ahead of the World Cup. In the World Cup, their humiliating loss to India led to huge backlash and though it woke them up but it was too late.
