It would not be very wrong to say that the Indian Premier League has given all the individuals associated with the game a big opportunity to earn big in a short span of time. Started in 2008, the IPL has achieved unprecedented success and is growing stronger with each passing season. The players from all around the globe are definitely the biggest attraction of the tournament and thus they are also the biggest earners.
At the same time, there is little denying the fact that the umpires, officials, and others also pocket a good chunk of fortune. And it should not be really surprising. After all, it is the umpires and the other officials who ensure that the games are conducted in a smooth manner. But unfortunately, the umpires and the match referees do not get as much credit as they deserve. But unlike the fans, the BCCI has made sure that the match referees get the worth for the hard work they put in.
The Indian cricket board recently revealed the fees they paid to the match umpires and match referees for their service in the IPL 2019. On August 21, the BCCI released the details of payments made above Rs. 25 Lakh during the month of July 2019. The press release included information about the fee received by match officials during the IPL 2019 season and one can say that the figures were really staggering.
Former India pacer Javagal Srinath was the highest-paid match-referee and pocketed a staggering amount of INR Rs 52,45,128.
Work of match-referees
Unlike the on-field umpires and the third umpire, the match referees’ function is not very much visible to the fans. It, however, should not undermine the role they play. Starting from the toss till the very end of the game, the referees are involved in almost every matter. These are the officials who make sure that the rules are being followed by both the player and the appointed umpires.
Following the game, the referees are required to submit a report to the governing body while mentioning if the Code of Conduct was breached and hand out penalties for them.
