The Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), like RCB, have ended their Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign with a convincing victory over. They defeated the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by seven wickets but took more than 14.2 overs to chase down the target which confirmed CSK’s top two finish after the league stage. Even if Mumbai Indians (MI) wins the next game against KKR now, the Delhi Capitals (DC) will go to the third position and not CSK.
As far as the match is concerned, KL Rahul shined with the willow in the chase as he comfortably outscored his partner Chris Gayle who struggled during his stay in the middle. Rahul got the better of Harbhajan Singh in the powerplay to rip him apart. The classy batsman slammed the third fastest fifty of the season off 19 deliveries and marched on towards a well-deserved century.
Meanwhile, Gayle got into his elements as well and hit a couple of sixes. The opening duo of KXIP added 108 runs in 10.3 overs before both the batsmen were sent back by none other than Harbhajan Singh. Soon Mayank Agarwal was also sent back by the same bowler. However, Nicholas Pooran was in his zone and he didn’t let the run-rate come down. His 36-run blitzkrieg ensured that the game finished in KXIP’s favour with two overs to spare.
Du Plessis lights up Mohali
Earlier, it was about Faf du Plessis and Suresh Raina for CSK after Shane Watson endured yet another failure. The duo, especially Raina, took the attack to the opposition and played some exquisite strokes. Du Plessis took his time before dealing in boundaries in the second half of the innings. While Raina scored 53 off 38 deliveries, Du Plessis missed out on a well deserved century courtesy a superlative delivery from Sam Curran.
He got out for 96 off 55 balls and the Men in Yellow couldn’t get the final flourish in the last few overs to finish on 170 runs for the loss of five wickets after 20 overs. KXIP chased down the total pretty easily in the end but that only pushed them up from the bottom position in the points table.
