The three-time champion Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are having an underwhelming season in the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2020) thus far. The team registered a horrible defeat against the defending champions Mumbai Indians at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on October 23, 2020. Rohit Sharma’s MI is now at the top of the points table, winning seven out of their first ten matches in the championship. On the other hand, CSK are gasping for breath. The Yellow Army are placed eighth in the table with three wins in eleven games.
Kieron Pollard replaced Rohit Sharma as the captain of Mumbai for this match as the latter is down with a hamstring injury. Batting first, CSK soon travelled the journey from being solid to going void. The team entered the contest with three changes, Ruturaj Gaekwad for Shane Watson, Narayan Jagadeesan for Kader Jadhav and Imran Tahir for Piyush Chawla. However, it didn’t reap the desired results as it was the first time that the Yellow Army lost 5 wickets in the powerplay.
Ishan Kishan scripts an easy victory for his team
However, Sam Curran emerged as a messiah for his team as he scored 52 off 47 deliveries including 4 fours and 2 sixes at a strike rate of 110.64 to take the team to a total of 114. For Mumbai Indians, Trent Boult bowled the spell of his life by taking 4 wickets at an economy of 4.5. Jasprit Bumrah and Rahul Chahar had two each to their name while Nathan Coulter-Nile also took one scalp.
The 115-run target at Sharjah was an easy target for the four-time champions. In the absence of Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan opened the innings with Quinton de Kock. MI innings went exactly in contrast with the CSK.
Ishan proved himself as one of the prime contenders for the opening slot with his quickfire innings of 68 runs off 37 deliveries including 6 fours and 5 sixes at a strike rate of 183.78. He found an ally in the form of wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock who played a sublime innings of 46 off 37. MI didn’t lose even a single wicket and finished the game in the 13th over of the innings.
