After three consecutive defeats, the three-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) finally won a match to climb up the points table from the eighth spot. In the match against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on October 25, Sunday at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, the Super Kings registered a comprehensive victory by 8 wickets. It was the bowling unit that scripted victory for the team.
Winning the toss, RCB decided to bat first. The pitch appeared to be slow and sluggish, therefore it was expected that the spinners would rule the show. However, it was the CSK pacers that gave breakthroughs to their team and restricted the opposition to a below-par total of 145 at the loss of 6 wickets.
Sam Curran emerged as the highest wicket-taker for the Yellow Army with three big wickets of Virat Kohli, Aaron Finch and Moeen Ali. Deepak Chahar also named two wickets while the New Zealand spinner Mitchell Santner had one. Despite the half-century by RCB skipper Kohli (50 off 43), the team failed to post a big total on the board.
Ruturaj Gaikwad shine in the chase
While chasing 146, the Super Kings had a brilliant start as they were at 48/1 in the powerplay. It was a bad day at the office for the RCB bowlers as they could neither stop the flow of runs nor take the wickets. After getting Faf du Plessis in the powerplay, the second wicket came in the 14th over in the form of Ambati Rayudu, however, by then CSK only needed 33 runs off 39 deliveries.
The young talent Ruturaj Gaikwad emerged as the match-winner for CSK as he played the knock of not out 65 off 51 deliveries including 4 fours and 3 sixes at a strike rate of 127.45. With the cameos from Du Plessis (25 off 13), Rayudu (39 off 27) and skipper Dhoni (19* off 21), the Yellow Army easily chased down the target with 8 balls remaining.
Though CSK still has an outside chance of making it to the playoffs, it seems practically impossible as their qualification will majorly depend on the performance of other franchises. RCB, on the other hand, can still easily make it to the playoffs despite this defeat as they are placed at third position in the points table with 14 points.
