Delhi Capitals lost their third consecutive game of the tournament as SRH defeated them by a massive margin. DC opted to chase on a tricky surface and the decision was proved wrong by some attacking cricket from SRH openers. Wriddhiman Saha and David Warner played extraordinary innings to provide SRH with a rapid start and they didn’t lose the momentum till the very end.
While chasing a massive total of 220, DC started poorly as they lost early wickets. With SRH grabbing wickets at regular intervals, Delhi was never able to snatch the control of the game and fell short by 88 runs. With this massive defeat, they have dropped to the third spot on the points table. DC need one more win to qualify for the playoffs and as their last two fixtures are against RCB and MI, things are looking difficult for them considering their dismal form.
Here are the mistakes committed by DC against SRH:-
1. DC didn’t have plan B
Delhi Capitals are quite reliable on their two overseas pacers to provide them early wickets. Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje have troubled several world-class batsmen with their pace upfront. However, David Warner and Wriddhiman Saha looked in great touch and they didn’t allow the speedsters to leave any impact. As DC didn’t have a habit to see their pacer struggle, they didn’t have a second plan to control the run-flow and SRH scored a massive total.
2. Changing an already set batting order
DC has been one of the most consistent sides in their team combination and batting order. Still, considering a massive chase, they tinkered their batting order to play Marcus Stoinis and Shimron Hetmyer at number three and four. However, they didn’t look comfortable against SRH spinners and failed to contribute much. If they would have trusted Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant to do the job they have been doing, they could have taken the game deep.
3. DC allowed the big total to get into their nerves
Delhi came into the field in the second innings with immense pressure of chasing at 11 runs per over. This led them to play erratic shots early on and none of their batsmen was able to play big shots. If they would’ve played patiently and could have given time to themselves, the total could have been chased by taking the game deep.
DC was extremely successful side in the first half of IPL 2020. Their perfectly balanced team looked better than any other side and they were sailing towards the top two spots. However, other teams have now found a weakness of Delhi Capitals as it is quite evident as they have batted second in four games in this tournament and have failed to chase in three of them.
