Delhi Capitals (DC) started their campaign with a perfect note. They have won three out of their 4 games in the season so far and are sitting comfortably on in the top four of the points table. However they received a major setback in their last game against KKR as their experienced leg-spinner, Amit Mishra, got injured on the field.
Mishra is a vital cog in Delhi’s line up and has picked up three wickets in as many matches. He picked up a flexor tendon injury to the ring finger of his bowling hand whilst attempting to take a catch in the last game and he has now been ruled out of IPL 2020. Delhi has got enough experienced spinners in their ranks but replacing Mishra is going to be an arduous task.
Mishra has played 150 games in IPL and has been one of the most effective bowlers of the tournament. Notably, the veteran cricketer is among the highest wicket-takers of IPL as well. He carries a reputation of a wicket-taker in the middle overs and if Delhi ropes in a replacement, same would be expected out of him.
Here are the three possible replacements for Amit Mishra at Delhi Capitals:
1. Jalaj Saxena
Jalaj Saxena is one of the well-known spinners of the domestic circuit and when he went unsold in IPL 2020 auctions, it came as shock for Indian cricket community. With reliable off-break, he is also a handy batsman lower down the order.
Though he has never played any game in IPL, he has represented Mumbai in Champions League 2014. With an experience of more than 12 years, the 33-year-old spinner could come in as a suitable replacement for Mishra. He has scored up more than 5000 runs First-class cricket along with 200 wickets against his name.
As Delhi already has Sandeep Lamichhane and Axar Patel in their bowling attack, they can go for Saxena who will provide them with the off-spin option. If Delhi picks Jalaj, it will be quite a fascinating experience for the off-spinner as he will get a chance to play along with Ravichandran Ashwin.
2. Shams Mulani
Shams Mulani is a left-arm orthodox bowler. He hasn’t played any international cricket or IPL but the youngster has made a name for him in the Indian domestic circuit. He plays for Mumbai in the domestic cricket and along with his left-arm spin, he can contribute with the bat as well.
The 23-year-old has already been compared to Ravindra Jadeja because of his playing style. He is also known for his athleticism in on the field as he has grabbed some stunning catches. He also has a considerable amount of experience which is a must while replacing an IPL giant like Amit Mishra.
The Raigad-born all-rounder has scored 79 runs in 22 T20s along with picking up 20 wickets at an average of 23.25. As Delhi doesn’t have a big hitter lower down the order, having Mulani in a team can provide the much-needed cover.
3. Shivil Kaushik
Shivil Kaushik possesses one of the rarest arts of cricket– chinaman bowling. He can be roped in as a surprise package to an almost completely equipped spin-attack of Delhi. He has played in IPL in the past but had an average outing for Gujrat Lions.
He has played 10 games in IPL so far and has picked up six scalps. More than his brilliant spell against KXIP, where he picked up 3 for 20, he is more popular for the game against RCB. While bowling against Indian skipper Virat Kohli, he received a serious hammering the death overs.
The 25-year-old hasn’t played in IPL since 2017 and that can be one of the factors that can go against him. Though being a chinaman bowler is an added advantage for him. Interestingly, the Delhi side already has a left-arm orthodox bowler, a leg spinner and an off-spinner as well. If they add Shivil to their squad, they can have all the varieties of spin in its artillery.
