It seems like the upcoming IPL 2020 Auction is going to be a bigger affair than what it actually sounds like. All franchises are aware of the fact that the auction for the next edition will be a much bigger and significant one. Even if the franchises don’t perform well in this auction they don’t have much to lose. However, it seems like no team is willing to take even a single player for granted.
332 players have been confirmed to go under the hammer on 19th December in Kolkata and that will definitely bring in a lot of cricketers up for sale for these franchises. The domestic circuit saw some excellent young talents flourish while some veterans too made a strong case for themselves. But the most fascinating of all factors will be the foreign players’ list, as it has happened for many years.
There are some big names up for grabs and all teams have their eyes set on a few overseas players, who pretty much fit into every setup in the league.
Here are five players who could fetch huge money contracts in the upcoming auction:
1. Pat Cummins
Without a shadow of a doubt, the most attractive player of the tournament will be Patrick Cummins from Australia. The young pacer has attained new heights in partnership with Mitchell Starc and is going to be one of the players to watch out for when the Aussies host the T20 World Cup next year. The Australian seems to be clear in his mind that he’ll play as many T20s as possible in this span of time.
Cummins has represented the Delhi Daredevils and Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL previously but failed to make his mark in the team. What lies ahead for speedster is a glorious road towards greatness, which he definitely can achieve if he’s putting the right amount of hard work. He is one of those players who will fit into every team in the IPL.
But Cummins will be primarily in the eyes of Kings XI Punjab and Royal Challengers Bangalore, who don’t just need the player badly but also have enough in their pocket to go for him. Punjab, who have INR 42 crore in their pocket heading into this auction, are the favourites to win his services as it stands.
2. Glenn Maxwell
One of the most glamorous T20 cricketers in the world, Glenn Maxwell looks in much better shape than what he did in 2014 when he wrecked havoc in the tournament. His heroics with the Kings XI Punjab is still rated as one of the most glittering individual performances in IPL history, but besides that, he could never live up to the expectations.
Maxwell seems to be much clear in his head in terms of awareness of what to do and what not to. The all-rounder has been performing decently in every department and he has great experience of playing on Indian soil, which could make him a strong contender for a huge contract, if not the costliest on the day.
Royal Challengers Bangalore will have a keen eye on him and Virat Kohli will definitely relish having a talent like him and AB de Villiers handling the middle order responsibility. There is a good chance he could head back to his old franchise Kings XI, but the RCB are in dire need of a talent like him to go all the way in the tournament.
3. Evin Lewis
A strange similarity among all the players who were released by teams saw a lot of top-order batsmen find their way back to the auction table. Evin Lewis is one of them, who was released by the Mumbai Indians. The swashbuckling West Indian opener has a style very much reminiscent of the great Chris Gayle but is a long distance away from reaching his level of brilliance.
Evin Lewis is a major presence in most T20 tournaments across the globe. Although he has been a tad inconsistent, Lewis still has a great market value. It did surprise some fans when Mumbai Indians released the player as there is no way they can retain him for a price lesser than what they were paying earlier.
Teams like Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders will be keenly looking at batsmen who can be as explosive as him. Going by his recent form, he could get into any side as a backup opener as well and is a strong contender to end up with the Orange Army.
4. Tom Banton
A few months ago, Tom Banton was an unknown name in the cricketing universe but his performances in the Vitality Blast caught the attention of a major segment. He went on to make his debut shortly after England’s World Cup triumph and looked sharp with his stroke-making. At 21, he definitely is one of the brightest talents in world cricket.
He has a very clean and clear batting technique and avoids complications while trying to clear his front leg before going for a smack. He doesn’t back away from playing his shots and is a fabulous driver of the cricket ball. His ability to combat the spinners will be under scrutiny on the dry pitches in India, but it is almost certain that he will earn a huge contract.
Again, he fits into a lot of setups who are looking to buy players who can fetch them great returns in the long run. Although he might spend a couple of seasons in the IPL not getting many games, if he can prove his worth in the few chances he gets, we all will be talking very highly of this youngster from Nottingham.
5. Chris Lynn
It was surprising to see Kolkata Knight Riders release Chris Lynn this season, despite performing decently for the side. But the move was understandable as Lynn cost them a whopping INR 9.4 crore and maybe the return he was giving wasn’t meeting their expectations. The rumour has it that the Knight Riders will definitely go back for him at a cheaper price tag.
Lynn notched 495 and 401 runs in the last two seasons and his strike-rate is always above the 140-mark. Without a debate, he is one of the best openers available in the auction and there are teams in dire need of a talent like him. If he can end up playing a good 10-15 overs, he has the talent to capture half the game for his side.
It’ll be interesting to see if franchises still look at him with the same awe. Besides the usual suspects in Kolkata Knight Riders, the likes of Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians could attempt to win his services. It’ll be tough for him to go under a price of INR 6 Crore going by the current availability and circumstances.
