The round 2 of the IPL 2020 auction witnessed a lot of players going unsold. In this round, capped wicket-keepers, fast bowlers and the leg-spinners went under the hammer. A total of 18 players were up for grabs and only five of them managed to secure the IPL contract for the upcoming season. Sheldon Cottrell was the expensive buy in this round with the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) shelling out Rs 8.5 crore for him.
The left-arm pacer, famous for his salute celebration was expected to go for a whopping amount after his recent exploits against India in the T20Is. His base price was only Rs 50 lakh and multiple franchises were interested in him. However, the most shocking buy was Nathan Coulter-Nile who will be paid Rs 8 crore by the defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI).
MI and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were behind him from the word go and it seemed as if the former side wanted him desperately. CSK had to opt-out of the bidding forcefully eventually as they had only around Rs 9 crore.
Chawla goes for Rs 6.75 crore while Rahim goes unsold
CSK, however, went behind Piyush Chawla which left everyone stunned. The leggie had played for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the previous season and the franchise had released him after underwhelming returns. But CSK went hell-bent for the Punjab player and secured his services for Rs 6.75 crore. Having said that, Chawla’s numbers in the shortest format are decent enough and he could prove useful for the CSK at the Chepauk.
Among the other sold players, Jaydev Unadkat once again went to the Rajasthan Royals for Rs 3 crore while Alex Carey’s services were bagged by the Delhi Capitals for Rs 2.4 crore. Interestingly, Bangladesh wicket-keeper Mushfiqur Rahim who had earlier opted out of the auction and had put his name back on a franchise’s request found no bidders at all.
The biggest name to go unsold in this round was South Africa’s legendary fast bowler Dale Steyn. He made his comeback after recovering from injury earlier this year post the World Cup. He also endured a wonderful stint at the MSL for the Capetown Blitz. But no franchise was interested in him.
