On Tuesday, October 6, young Indian fast bowler Kartik Tyagi made his debut in the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The youngster replaced Jaydev Unadkat, who wasn’t getting wickets and was leaking runs as well. Tyagi was drafted in by the Rajasthan Royals (RR) for the match against the Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
On debut, he didn’t overly flatter to deceive. Rohit Sharma, the Mumbai captain, tried to put pressure on him with an early boundary. But in the very first over, he induced a false shot off Quinton de Kock. Overall, Tyagi gave away 36 runs in his quota of four overs, conceding three fours and one six. The Young Turk also got in eight dot balls to show his class and accuracy.
In the meantime, Ben Stokes, who’s also a part of the Royals, made an observation about Kartik. As per the England all-rounder, Tyagi has a run-up similar to Brett Lee and he releases the ball like India’s Ishant Sharma. He took to Twitter and write, “Tyagi has a run up like Brett Lee and delivers like Ishant Sharma @rajasthanroyals.”
Replying to the same, New Zealand fast bowler Mitchell McClenaghan stated that Tyagi has mannerisms similar to Tom Curran, Lee and West Indies’ Alzarri Joseph. “Tom Curran to start Brett Lee middle Alzarri Joseph delivery,” wrote McClenaghan.

Lee, who’s in Star Sports’ broadcasting panel, took time out to reply on Stokes’ message and he agreed with the English cricketer. He replied to Stokes and wrote, “Yeh I can see that mate.”

Tyagi was a crucial member of the India U19 team in the World Cup earlier this year in South Africa. The team, led by Priyam Garg, made the final where Akbar Ali’s Bangladesh beat them by three wickets. Tyagi was impressive as he picked up as many as 11 wickets from six matches at an economy of 3.45. He was also India’s most successful pacer in the mega event.
As far RR were concerned, they couldn’t get over the line against MI, losing by 57 runs. Placed seventh in the points table, Steve Smith and Co are next set to lock horns against Delhi Capitals (DC) on October 9.
