Anrich Nortje didn’t have luck favouring him in the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL). The South African speedster was set to play for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) after having some decent outings for the Cape Town Blitz in the Mzansi Super League (MSL). The Young Turk managed to impress Jacques Kallis, the then Knight Riders head coach.
However, a shoulder injury ended his campaign even before the tournament got underway. Nevertheless, he’s back into business. The 26-year-old has been picked to play for the Delhi Capitals (DC) in the 2020 IPL, though he isn’t a first-choice. The pacer has come in as a replacement of England’s Chris Woakes, who, earlier, pulled out of the tournament.
Anrich Nortje showing his class
Nortje has already played quite a few international games for the Proteas and is in good shape. In six Tests, seven ODIs and three T20Is, Anrich has 19, 14 and two wickets respectively. Even as there’s little doubt on his credentials on the field, there’s some confusion over pronouncing his name.
In a Question and Answer session on the Capitals’ Instagram handle, a fan asked Nortje about the correct pronunciation of his name. The fan wrote, “How to pronounce your name Nortje, video will do justice, u were fab in the England series.’ Nortje didn’t disappoint and answered the supporter with the apt pronunciation.

Nortje was, indeed, a revelation, in the home series against England. In four Tests, he picked up 18 wickets with best figures of 5/110 in the opening Test at the Wanderers in Johannesburg. Thereafter, he also played the T20I series against the Three Lions and the ODI series versus Australia. In first-class, List A and T20 cricket, he has a combined tally of 273 wickets.
In the Capitals, he will have his South African teammate Kagiso Rabada for company. The Capitals also have India’s Ishant Sharma in their ranks, making their fast-bowling unit a force to reckon with. In 2019, DC, captained by Shreyas Iyer, progressed to the Qualifier 2 after a few lacklustre campaigns. This time, they will be looking to get their hands on the coveted trophy.
