Rajasthan Royals made a winning start to their IPL 2020 campaign defeating the Chennai Super Kings by 16 runs on Tuesday. The Rajasthan franchise posted 216/7 in their 20 overs thanks to 32-ball 74 by Sanju Samson that included nine maximums. Steve Smith scored a 47-ball 69 while Jofra Archer gave proper finish with four consecutive sixes in the 20th over. The Super Kings never showed the intent to chase down the target after the fall of 4th wicket. Faf du Plessis smashed a 37-ball 72 only to take the CSK team to 200/6.
Here are all the statistical highlights from the six-hitting feast at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Tuesday:
RR’s rare win against CSK:
2010 – Last time Chennai Super Kings lost an IPL match while chasing a target against Rajasthan Royals was way back in 2010 season. RR won the game by 17 runs while defending their total of 177/8 during the game hosted by Ahmedabad.
1 – Rajasthan Royals are now the first team to post 200+ totals in three different countries in the IPL. They finished with 211/4 against Kings XI Punjab during the 2009 IPL season held in South Africa while their total of 216/7 against CSK was their first 200+ total in UAE.
A six-hitting feast in Sharjah:
33 – The 33 sixes hit by both the teams in this match are now the joint-highest in any IPL match. The 2018 season game between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings also witnessed a total of 33 sixes being hit.
17 – Number of sixes Rajasthan Royals hit during this match; the most sixes RR have struck in an IPL match. Prior to this match, the Royals never hit more than 14 sixes in an IPL game.
Quick-fire knocks by Samson and Archer:
19 – The 19-ball fifty by Sanju Samson is now the joint 2nd fastest in the IPL for Rajasthan Royals. Jos Buttler scored an 18-ball fifty during the 2018 edition against Delhi franchise while Owais Shah also struck a fifty off 19 balls against RCB during the 2012 edition.
337.5 – Jofra Archer’s strike rate of 337.5 during his 8-ball 27* is the highest strike rate in an IPL innings of 25+ runs for Rajasthan Royals. The previous highest was 309.09 by Chris Morris during his unbeaten 11-ball 34 against SRH during the 2015 edition.
Samson’s all-round performance:
9 – Sanju Samson’s nine sixes in this match are the joint-most by any player in an IPL match outside India. Glenn Maxwell also struck nine sixes during the 2014 season game against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Sharjah.
4 – Sanju Samson affected four dismissals in this match with help of two stumpings and two catches. He is only the 2nd wicketkeeper after Heinrich Klaasen (vs RCB, 2018) to affect four dismissals in an IPL match for the Rajasthan Royals.
74 – The 74 runs scored by Samson is now the highest individual score in the IPL by a player who affected 4 or more keeping dismissals during the same match. Adam Gilchrist, in 2012, scored an unbeaten 64 after affecting four dismissals in the game against CSK.
150 – This game against CSK was Samson’s 150th appearance in Twenty20 cricket. The last of the nine sixes he struck in the match was his 150th maximum in the Twenty20 format.
A tough game for Lungi and Chawla:
56 – The 56 runs conceded by Lungi Ngidi are the joint-most runs conceded by an overseas bowler for Chennai Super Kings. Albie Morkel was taken for 56 runs during the 2010 edition game in Chennai also by Rajasthan Royals.
2 – Lungi Ngidi (1/56) and Piyush Chawla (1/55) became only the 2nd pair in the IPL to concede 55 or more runs in the same innings. Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2/55) and Karn Sharma (0/57) were the first to do so during the 2016 season game against the RCB team.
30 – The 30 runs conceded by Lungi Ngidi in the final over of RR innings are the joint-most runs given away by any bowler in the 20th over of an IPL game. Chris Jordan conceded 30 runs on Sunday during the game between DC vs KXIP.
