Chennai Super Kings (CSK), after winning their opening game, slumped to back-to-back defeats in the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). After Rajasthan Royals (RR) beat them, the Delhi Capitals (DC) got past them by 44 runs.
It all went downhill for MS Dhoni and Co after they elected to field first. The DC openers put on a show to exert serious pressure on the hapless CSK bowlers. During the run-chase, the Yellow Army couldn’t garner much momentum even when the required rate kept mounting.
Faf du Plessis did get back the Orange Cap from Kings XI Punjab’s KL Rahul, but his efforts again weren’t enough for CSK, much to his dismay. Kagiso Rabada got the Purple Cap and the Capitals have managed to go atop the points table with an impressive net run rate of +1.1.
Here are the DC Player Ratings for the CSK vs DC match:
Prithvi Shaw- 9.5/10
Prithvi Shaw made amends after a poor show against KXIP. He took on the opposition bowling from the outset and got his team off to a flying start. He notched his half-century off 35 balls in a 94-run opening stand with Shikhar Dhawan. The youngster eventually scored 64 runs off 43 deliveries.
Shikhar Dhawan- 8/10
Shikhar Dhawan didn’t get much strike in the powerplay as Shaw kept playing his shots. But he did his bit as well. The left-hander got 35 runs off 27 balls with three fours and a six. He was the first wicket to fall after being trapped plumb front by Piyush Chawla while going for an audacious reverse-sweep.
Rishabh Pant- 8.5/10
Rishabh Pant played a matured hand against the Punjab-franchise and he backed it up with another decent knock. The southpaw got 37 runs off 25 balls and stayed unbeaten until the end of the innings. His knock was laced with five fours and he struck the ball at a decent strike-rate of 148.
Shreyas Iyer- 7/10
Shreyas Iyer came to bat after the Capitals lost the wickets of Dhawan and Shaw in quick succession. Along with Pant, he put on 58 runs for the third-wicket partnership. Iyer got only one four in his 22-ball 26. In the last ball of the 19th over, he perished to Sam Curran, who bowled a slower off-cutter.
Marcus Stoinis- 5/10
Marcus Stoinis didn’t have much to do in the encounter. He came to bat in the final over with the Capitals already in a strong position. The Melbourne Stars batter notched five runs off three balls. The Aussie didn’t get a chance to bowl as the Iyer-led unit persisted with their five specialist bowlers.
Shimron Hetmyer- N/A
Axar Patel- 9/10
Axar Patel didn’t get a chance to bat, but he was outstanding with the ball in hand. In the middle-overs, he didn’t let the batters attack him. He was DC’s most economical bowler on the day, conceding only 18 runs in his four overs. Patel also got the crucial wicket of Shane Watson.
Amit Mishra- 8/10
Amit Mishra might not have picked up a wicket, but he didn’t leak runs either. His tight line and lengths made sure that the required-rate go only up. In his four overs, Mishra, who replaced an injured Ravi Ashwin, gave away 23 runs. He gave away only one four and bowled six dot balls.
Kagiso Rabada- 9.5/10
Kagiso Rabada again stole the show and was hard to get away. He gave away only two runs in his first over and conceded 26 runs in his four overs. Most importantly, he picked up the wickets of Faf du Plessis, MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja, all of whom have the ability to win their team matches.
Anrich Nortje- 9/10
Anrich Nortje bowled without luck in the first game, but he was duly rewarded against the Super Kings. He removed Murali Vijay in the last ball of the mandatory powerplay. Then he removed Kedar Jadhav, who was looking dangerous. Among the DC bowlers, he bowled the most dot balls- 12.
Avesh Khan- 2/10
Avesh Khan replaced Mohit Sharma and flattered to deceive. The pacer didn’t pick up a single wicket and went for as many as 42 runs in his four overs. He was taken for six fours and a six. The CSK batters went after him and the young fast bowler had very little answer to the counter-attack.
