The Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) campaign in the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has gone from bad to worse. Though they have mathematical chances of qualifying for the playoffs, the writing is pretty much on the walls for them. MS Dhoni, their skipper, hasn’t had the greatest of times after he made his return to competitive cricket following a gap of 14 months.
On Friday, October 23, CSK tasted their heaviest defeat in the history of the IPL, losing to the Mumbai Indians (MI) by 10 wickets at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. With the defeat, the Yellow Army kept languishing at the bottom of the points table.
In the meantime, former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag reckons that the youngsters let Dhoni down. The likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Narayan Jagadeesan made their return to the playing eleven but couldn’t open their accounts.
It will be interesting to see how MS Dhoni and Co make a comeback: Sehwag
“This loss against Mumbai will hurt for a very long time. This hurts even more as MS Dhoni might feel that I have tried my youngsters today and they have disappointed me once again. They should have at least scored some runs for themselves and should have taken time to have a taste of the tournament,” Sehwag was quoted as saying on Cricbuzz.
“If the youngsters could have carried the team to a respectable total of 140-150 runs, MS Dhoni would have been contented with that performance. Dhoni would be a lot more hurt as the youngsters have let him down. It will be interesting to see how they make a comeback from here,” the veteran added.
As far as the match was concerned, nothing went in CSK’s favour after they lost the toss and were put into bat first. Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult wreaked havoc in the powerplay, picking up as many as five wickets. In the middle-overs, Rahul Chahar strangled them with a couple of wickets.
Mumbai, led by Kieron Pollard in Rohit Sharma’s absence, chased down 115 with as many as 46 balls to spare. The Super Kings’ next match is against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Sunday in Dubai.
