When AB de Villiers is on song, it is better to keep everything aside and just enjoy the masterclass. If his unbeaten 73 at Sharjah was superb, everyone were in awe of the South African for his match-winning knock of 55* off 22 balls in Dubai on Saturday. It doesn’t matter for De Villiers if the boundaries are big or short. When he hits it, most of the times, he clears the fence comfortably on any ground in the world.
The same happened in the match 33 of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) during the game between the Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Devdutt Padikkal and Virat Kohli got out off consecutive deliveries with the team still needing 76 runs off 41 deliveries. AB de Villiers walked in with a lot to do for his team and what followed later was absolute carnage!
He didn’t go berserk from the word go though. It was a well calculated chase from him. The first of six sixes came off Jofra Archer in the 16th over when the bowler dropped it a bit short only to see the ball travel into the stands. De Villiers rocked back and thumped the ball over deep mid-wicket fielder. The next one came in the 17th over with Jaydev Unadkat giving him room outside the off-stump.
The fuller length wide delivery allowed the batsman to open his arms and take the advantage of the shorter boundary on the off-side.
The AB de Villiers special in the 19th over
Despite the two sixes, good follow-up overs from RR pacers, brought the equation down to 35 runs off last two overs. And with Archer’s over still left, Steve Smith went for Unadkat to do the job for him. This is where AB de Villiers decided to launch an assault. He knew the left-arm pacer will bowl a slower delivery and waited for the ball to arrive at him on the back-foot.
He ended up hitting three consecutive sixes to leave the Royals baffled. All of them were similar in nature with Unadkat bowling his cutters and De Villiers rocking on the backfoot to smash it over the longest boundary nonchalantly. It turned the game completely and then it was only a matter of time when RCB won the game.
Deservingly, AB de Villiers finished the game with a huge six, once again on the leg-side off a short delivery from Archer in the last over. And the best thing about all those shots were none of them were mishits and all travelled a fair distance into the stands.
