Ben Stokes, the England all-round cricketer, is currently in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He is presently plying his trade for the Rajasthan Royals (RR). He didn’t play the first six games in the championship though he reached the gulf country quite a few days ago. Stokes has had a rough time in the last couple of months or so.
Back in August, he headed to Christchurch, his place of birth, to spend time with his family. Earlier this year, his father, Ged, was diagnosed with brain cancer when Stokes was busy playing in the tour of South Africa. The 29-year-old revealed how tough it was for him when he reached New Zealand. He also said that his father wanted him to get his cricket and family priorities straight.
Ben Stokes struggled against SRH
After spending time with his loved ones, Stokes left for the UAE where he quarantined in Dubai before joining the Royals’ bio-security bubble. He eventually played his first game against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Sunday, October 11, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. He didn’t have much to do with the ball in hand as he was entrusted for a solitary over.
However, to the surprise of many, he came out to open the batting along with his England teammate Jos Buttler. The left-hander started his knock with a classy four down the ground to get going. But then, left-arm fast bowler Khaleel Ahmed accounted for his wicket. Stokes tried to hit the ball on the on-side only to see his woodwork go for a toss. The tactic to open with Stokes didn’t pay off.
In the meantime, the Royals seemed to have made another error. Instead of ‘Stokes’, the franchise wrongly printed ‘Skokes’ on the cricketer’s jersey. Looking into it, England’s Barmy Army had a hilarious take. They took to Twitter and wrote, “Apparently this lad can knock a ball about. Sign him up @englandcricket #SkokesyForEngland.”
