As the crack-buster cricketing carnival, the 2020 IPL, enters into the third week since its commencement, a myriad of drama and theatrics have unfolded in front of the eyes of the eternal fans. From the edge-of-the-seat games to thumping victories, controlling emotions appears to be a treacherous task for the cricket fans.
Although many players displayed a propensity of mental strength and ‘performed’ in critical situations, some ‘succumbed’ to precarious conditions. Therefore, it goes without saying that the IPL has thrown the balls of opportunity to, apparently, all the budding talents. However, few grabbed it tightly and some dropped it in an unlikable manner.
On that note, this article attempts to deconstruct the names of those players who could not perform in the cash-rich league so far. Hence, they fit into the rules of mid-season transfer introduced by the BCCI in the 11th edition of the IPL. A number of massive players from each of the eight participating teams feature in the mid-season transfer club.
Before we start off with the names, let us take a glance on the rules of the amendment incurred in the world’s biggest cricketing league:
a) The franchises will be allowed to sign a player from other franchises at the halfway-mark of the season.
b) The player should not have played more than two matches till the halfway mark to be eligible for the transfer.
c) The transfer rule will come into effect once all the teams have played seven matches each.
So, without wasting any further time, let’s look at the list for mid-season transfers in IPL 2020:
1. Chennai Super Kings
The three-times champion under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni appears to be struggling in the 13th edition of the IPL. Albeit, the Men in Yellow outplayed Kings XI Punjab in the 18th match, the team continue to find the proper antidote to their middle-order conundrum.
In what could be a major blow in the arm of CSK was the fact that two of its legends Harbhajan Singh and Suresh Raina pulled out of the tournament even before its commencement. It eventually forced the team management to scratch their heads finding players who could fill the huge void.
Apparently, the yellow brigade have a plethora of players who may get an early release from the side. The names of KM Asif, Imran Tahir, Narayan Jagadeesan, Karn Sharma, Mitchell Santner, Monu Kumar, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shardul Thakur, R Sai Kishore and Josh Hazlewood feature in the IPL list.
2. Delhi Capitals
Considered as one of the favourites to clinch the coveted trophy, Delhi are led by the young Mumbaikar Shreyas Iyer who appears to brim with confidence from the time he steps on the field. The team treasure a very well-balanced side and the fact that all the power-hitters appear to be in great shape gives an edge to the Capitals when compared with other franchises.
Having learnt the art of holding nerves, Delhi-side came out victorious in the thriller Super Over match against Kings XI Punjab. With mid-season transfer hitting the floors in a week, it will be exciting to see what the future has in store for the top-class team.
The players whose window of release remains open are Ajinkya Rahane, Avesh Khan, Harshal Patel, Ishant Sharma, Keemo Paul, Sandeep Lamicchane, Alex Carey, Lalit Yadav, Daniel Sams, Tushar Deshpande and Mohit Sharma.
3. Kings XI Punjab
Showcasing brilliant woodwork, the openers have stolen the show with their grace and elegance. Despatching balls to stands, the top-order batsmen have annihilated the tearaway pacers of opposition teams in a belligerent style.
Bagging the favourites tag, the Punjab team management needs to twiddle their fingers to get things back on track as they currently feature at the bottom of the points table. For the time being, the squad look formidable which is suggestive of the fact that the team may turn the tables if they correctly resolve the chinks in their armour.
Taking a cue from their under-performance, Arshdeep Singh, Darshan Nalkhande, Krishnappa Gowtham, Hardus Viljoen, Chris Gayle, Harpreet Brar, Jagadeesha Suchith, Mandeep Singh, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Murugan Ashwin, Deepak Hooda, Ishan Porel, Chris Jordan, Simran Singh and Tajinder Singh may get a chance to don the jersey of other franchise.
4. Kolkata Knight Riders
The two-time title-holders is bolstered by the entry of the ruthless batsman Eoin Morgan and the merciless pacer Pat Cummins. Although the team did not have a desirable start, KKR look confident to turn their ship in the right direction in the coming matches of the tournament.
Arguably one of the best squads with ruthless middle-order decimators, all what the side lacks is a good start in both the batting and bowling departments in their games. With Andre Russell not being able to find his rhythm with the bat, KKR are struggling at the moment in the league stage of the tournament.
As far as the list of players is concerned, Prasidh Krishna, Rinku Singh, Sandeep Warrier, Siddhesh Lad, Chris Green, M Siddharth, Tom Banton, Nikhil Naik, Ali Khan all remain under the radar of release.
5. Mumbai Indians
Having been considered as the favourites ever since the inception of the T20 league, Mumbai Indians have always been surrounded by players who are the best in the business. The team, which is synonymous to endeavour and hard work, also master the art of executing their plans correctly on a regular basis.
Placed on the top of the table at the moment, Mumbai Indians capitalised on crucial moments after facing a hindrance in the form of a humiliating defeat in the first match against Chennai Super Kings of the 13th season. The Rohit Sharma-led side would step into the field in the upcoming match with the positive intent to continue to lead the points table.
Players who have been underdogs in this season may suffer an early exit from the powerful team. The likes of Aditya Tare, Anukul Roy, Dhawal Kulkarni, Jayant Yadav, Sherfane Rutherford, Mitchell McClenaghan, Chris Lynn, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Saurabh Tiwary, Mohsin Khan, Digvijay Deshmukh and Prince Balwant Rai Singh are registered in the list.
6. Rajasthan Royals
The first season title-holders is presently led by Steve Smith, the former captain of Australia. The loyal-Royal is yet to show his stellar rendition on the 22 yards. Without a shadow of doubt, the Australian champ must be craving to take on the opposition bowlers from the word go.
Positioned currently at the 5th spot on the points table, the talisman and his knights will approach the upcoming matches with a no-mercy intent. The die-hard fans can’t wait for their team to get back on their winning ways in the IPL.
The players like Mayank Markande, Ankit Rajpoot, Manan Vohra, Mahipal Lomroor, Shashank Singh, Varun Aaron, Kartik Tyagi, Oshane Thomas, Aniruddha Joshi, Andrew Tye, Akash Singh, Anuj Rawat and Yashaswi Jaiswal get their name on the list.
7. Royal Challengers Bangalore
Ever since the inception of the cash-rich league, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have always entered the tournament as the favourites but eventually could not bring smiles on the faces of the ardent fans of the club.
Led by the Indian captain, Virat Kohli, the team initially faced hiccups in the form of a humiliating defeat by Kings XI Punjab. However, the skipper announced his return in the last game against Rajasthan Royals after a rough initial patch.
Gurkeerat Singh Mann, Moeen Ali, Mohammed Siraj, Parthiv Patel, Pawan Negi, Umesh Yadav, Josh Philippe, Chris Morris, Dale Steyn, Shahbaz Ahamad, Pavan Deshpande, Adam Zampa remain under the eyes for transfer.
8. Sunrisers Hyderabad
The 2016 champion has been a fine side as far as the batting and bowling combinations are concerned. The squad has a variety of players who can raise their hands up when his compatriot fails to perform at the crucial moment.
Led by the Australian heavyweight David Warner, the team is stationed at Number seven with an ignominious net run rate of -0.417. Sunrisers are expected to deliver top-notch performances in their upcoming matches so that they can seal the birth of playoffs in the IPL.
The likes of Basil Thampi, Billy Stanlake, Mohammad Nabi, Sandeep Sharma, Shahbaz Nadeem, Shreevats Goswami, Siddharth Kaul, Wriddhiman Saha, Vijay Shankar, Virat Singh, Bavanaka Sandeep, Fabien Allen and Sanjay Yadav may face an early departure from the star-studded team.
