Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) lost their fifth game of the season on Thursday against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL). Apart from many issues the team is facing, Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell not clicking at all has troubled the team a lot. He has mustered only 48 runs in six matches and at no stage, has tried to play a big shot.
Even in the game against SRH, Maxwell had a lot of overs left and had to just support Nicholas Pooran in the middle. While he looked determined to play well, the Aussie misjudged a single and was stunned with a direct hit from Priyam Garg. Another failure from him has left Virender Sehwag bamboozled and has questioned his credentials now.
“Don’t know what sort of a platform Glenn Maxwell needs to explode. He came in early (against Sunrisers Hyderabad) after Punjab lost two batsmen quickly. A lot of overs were left this time, but he failed. Earlier, he didn’t have pressure (batting in the death overs in previous matches), yet he got out without performing,” he said while speaking to Cricbuzz.
Virender Sehwag amazed with Glenn Maxwell’s auction price
Glenn Maxwell has never sort of clicked in the IPL in the last few years. He last scored a half-century back in 2016. Yet, Delhi franchise spent Rs 9 crore on him in the IPL 2018 auction while this time around, KXIP secured his services for a whopping amount of Rs 10.75 crore. Virender Sehwag is unable to understand why do teams run behind him despite his failures.
“I can’t quite understand his mindset because it’s been the same story every year. He gets sold in the auction for a hefty price but the result remains the same. Yet, people (franchises) run after him. This is something I don’t understand,” the former India cricketer added. Sehwag even went on to say that, Glenn Maxwell’s price tag will definitely come down to Rs 1-2 crore next year due to his string of low scores over the years.
“In the next auction, I think his price will drop from 10 crores to somewhere around Rs. 1-2 crores which is what it should be. It has to be kept in mind that he scored his last half-century in 2016. Today, he was only required to give Pooran some company. If he could just stay at the other end of the pitch, Pooran might have won KXIP the match. In the end, Pooran was left alone and got dismissed,” he concluded.
