On Monday, May 3 three members of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) camp including the likes of CEO Kasi Viswanathan, bowling coach L Balaji and the bus cleaner tested positive for the novel coronavirus. However, in another round of testing, Kasi Viswanathan returned a negative result while the other two tested positive.
CSK is again hit by a massive blow as it is now learned that their batting coach Michael Hussey has tested positive for Covid-19. The reports of Hussey came later on Tuesday. However, the management is hopeful that Hussey has produced a false Covid-19 test just like Viswanathan. In the same light, the batting coach is being retested.
“Hussey tested positive. But his samples are being redone. Hopefully, the report will come negative,” a source told The Times of India.
BCCI postpones IPL 2021
Meanwhile, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has postponed the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) for an indefinite time owing to the rise in the number of coronavirus cases among the players and support staff. The Covid-19 scare started in IPL 2021 with two players of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) including Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrior testing positive.
Adding to the misery, on Tuesday, Sunrisers Hyderbad wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha and Delhi Capitals (DC) spinner Amit Mishra also returned positive results. This potentially meant a breach in bio-bubble with as many as four teams including SRH, DC, KKR, and CSK under isolation.
Thus, BCCI decided to postpone the tournament rather than risking the safety of the other players and members involved. Meanwhile, it is speculated that the Indian board can host the T20 Championship in the September window just before the ICC T20 World Cup.
“The Indian Premier League Governing Council (IPL GC) and Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in an emergency meeting has unanimously decided to postpone IPL 2021 season, with immediate effect,” BCCI said in a release.
“The BCCI does not want to compromise on the safety of the players, support staff, and the other participants involved in organizing the IPL. This decision was taken keeping the safety, health, and well-being of all the stakeholders in mind,” it added.
