The 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been plagued by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Reportedly, the bio bubble has been breached and the same has raised concerns regarding how the T20 Championship will proceed further. Earlier today, it was learned that two Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) players Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier have tested positive for Covid-19.
The positive coronavirus result by two cricketers resulted in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) rescheduling the 30th match of IPL 2021 which was scheduled between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and KKR on Monday, May 3 at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Adding to the misery, three non-playing members of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) contingent returned a positive result for the deadly virus. Three members to test positive include the likes of CSK’s Chief Executive Officer Kasi Viswanathan, bowling coach Lakshmipathy Balaji and a bus cleaner.
In the latest development, it is learned that as many as five ground staff of the Delhi and Districts Cricket Association (DDCA) have tested positive for the coronavirus. The Arun Jaitely Stadium in Delhi is scheduled to host the IPL games till May 8 and four teams including the likes of Rajasthan Royals (RR), Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Mumbai Indians (MI), and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are present in the capital city.
The groundsmen who have contracted the deadly virus have immediately self-isolated themselves while the other members will soon undergo a round of Covid-19 testing. The Arun Jaitely Stadium last hosted the game between Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday afternoon.
Michael Slater travels to the Maldives, leaves the IPL bio bubble
The venue is now scheduled to host the match between the defending champions and the Royals on Tuesday, May 4. However, it is yet to be seen if the matches go ahead as per the plan on the BCCI will be forced to postpone the Tuesday fixture too.
Meanwhile, in another development, it is reported that the potential bio bubble breach has scared the Australian players and officials. It is understood that the former Australian cricketer and the commentator Michael Slater has also left the bubble. It is reported that the veteran travelled to the Maldives over the weekend to escape from India. The report added that other Australian players and coaching staff are keen on taking the same route as Slater to leave India.
