The intensity was at its top-most level during the 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL) opener between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Mumbai Indians (MI) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The game went down to the last ball and Virat Kohli’s Challengers came out trumps by two wickets. Harshal Patel became the Player of the Match for his five-wicket haul.
In the meantime, RCB had a hilarious conversation with Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Twitter. RCB thanked the Punjab-based franchise for releasing Glenn Maxwell. It was after Maxwell smashed Krunal Pandya for a massive six that landed on long on’s roof.
RCB and Punjab’s rib-tickling banter
RCB wrote, “First Maxi-mum in Red and Gold and he nearly hits it out of Chennai! Thank you @PunjabKingsIPL. We would hug you if not for social distancing.” Maxwell went on to score 39 off 28 with three fours and two sixes before Marco Jansen dismissed him.
In reply, the Punjab-based team, wittily, thanked RCB for releasing Chris Gayle, KL Rahul, Sarfaraz Khan, and Mayank Agarwal at different editions of the IPL. KXIP replied, “Aww, and thank you for Gayle, KL, Mandy, Sarfaraz, Mayank…”

The Challengers didn’t die wondering and brought into account KXIP copying their logo and jersey. RCB replied and wrote, “You missed jersey, helmet, pads…and logo? But between us, who’s keeping count?”

After the victory in the opener, Virat Kohli, the RCB skipper, was over the moon about being able to make a decent start to IPL 2021. He also lauded MI as the “strongest side in the competition”. Moreover, he said that the pitch got slower as the game progressed.
“It was important to play against the strongest side in the competition and test our side. Everyone was involved in this game, and when you win by two wickets, it means that everyone has gone in and played,” Kohli said.
“A lot of options for me as well that helped to bring the game back. The pitch was looking decent in the first half, but to be honest, with the old ball the length ball was difficult to get away,” he added.
RCB’s next game is against David Warner’s Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on April 14 at the Chepauk itself.
