The Royal Challengers Bangalore have been one of the most popular teams in IPL. The Bangalore-based franchise has an incredibly loyal fan-base that backs them irrespective of how they perform. The Royal Challengers had a decent IPL 2020 campaign, where they finished fourth.
Looking at their performance in the first half of IPL 2020, many believed the Royal Challengers Bangalore would end their title drought. However, the same did not happen. Bangalore lost momentum in the final phase of the competition. The Sunrisers Hyderabad ended their campaign in the playoffs.
The Royal Challengers Bangalore surprisingly released most of their players before IPL 2021. They have a very different squad this year compared to 2020. There were many questionable decisions the team management took at IPL Auction 2021. Here’s a look at the complete SWOT Analysis of the RCB squad for IPL 2021.
Strengths – Batting unit
The Royal Challengers Bangalore have assembled one of the most dangerous batting lineups in IPL history for the 2021 season. The Bangalore-based franchise already had Devdutt Padikkal, Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, and Joshua Philippe in their squad. They have now added some blockbuster names to their team.
Glenn Maxwell has joined the Royal Challengers for IPL 2021, while uncapped star Mohammed Azharuddeen also bagged a contract from the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Former RCB star Sachin Baby has returned to the franchise. Big Bash League star Daniel Christian has also returned to the Royal Challengers side.
The other names who can contribute with the bat for RCB are Daniel Sams, Harshal Patel, and Washington Sundar. All three all-rounders have played match-winning knocks at the domestic level. Thus, it goes without saying that the Royal Challengers Bangalore’s biggest strength is their batting department.
Weaknesses – Inexperienced fast-bowling unit
The Royal Challengers Bangalore do not have much experience in their fast-bowling attack. While most players play T20 cricket regularly, their IPL experience is not the same as the other fast-bowling units in the competition. Kyle Jamieson, who is the most expensive overseas player of the Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2021, has never played a T20 game in India.
Kane Richardson has been away from the IPL for quite some time, whereas Mohammed Siraj had been very expensive when bowling on Indian tracks. Navdeep Saini had a forgettable IPL season in the United Arab Emirates last year. Meanwhile, Dan Christian and Daniel Sams also have not played much in the IPL.
Thus, the lack of an established name in the fast-bowling attack could cost the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Virat Kohli will have to make the best use of his pace-bowling lineup to ensure Bangalore betters its IPL 2020 performance. On paper, RCB’s fast-bowling line-up looks a bit weaker compared to the other teams.
Opportunities – Big chance for Harshal Patel and KS Bharat
Harshal Patel has returned to the Royal Challengers Bangalore after a brief stint with the Delhi Capitals. Patel is one of the most underrated players in the Indian domestic circuit. The Indian cricket team is always in a hunt for pace-bowling all-rounders. Harshal Patel could be a decent addition to the Indian team if he receives proper opportunities.
Harshal is a player who can bowl four overs of right-arm medium pace. He can finish off the innings in style with some big shots in the slog overs. With Hardik Pandya not 100% fit, Vijay Shankar, and Shivam Dube falling out of favor, Harshal has an opportunity to impress while playing for Bangalore. An extraordinary performance could strengthen his candidature for a spot in the Indian team.
KS Bharat has made it to the Indian squad multiple times in his career. However, he is yet to make his international debut. Virat Kohli will get a chance of viewing Bharat closely in IPL 2021. If Bharat manages to perform consistently for the Royal Challengers Bangalore, he could join the race of Indian wicket-keepers for a spot in the limited-overs teams as well.
Threats – Glenn Maxwell’s form
Glenn Maxwell is a player who can single-handedly win matches for you consistently. However, seven years have passed since the IPL fans saw Glenn Maxwell destroy the opposition bowling units. There have been a couple of good performances from him here and there. However, Maxwell has been unable to replicate his 2014 brilliance in the IPL.
The Aussie all-rounder had a disastrous IPL season in the United Arab Emirates last year. He failed to clear the boundary even once in IPL 2020, highlighting his poor form. Still, the Royal Challengers Bangalore invested 14.25 crores to gain his services at the recently-conducted IPL Auction.
In case Glenn Maxwell fails to get going, the Royal Challengers might miss out on the trophy once again. RCB have a good back-up option in the form of Daniel Christian. However, the Royal Challengers Bangalore team management will likely give more opportunities to Maxwell because of his talent.
