The 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL) is just around the corner. But, before the tournament starts, there is a lot that is yet to be unfolded. The mini-auction for this season will be held in Chennai on February 18. This is that fateful day when a few players’ fortunes will take a turn for good. There are several foreign players who have opted to go under the hammer.
However, more than that, there are several more Indian uncapped players who have been recurring for getting an IPL team. It is also a good time for the IPL teams to go through the player’s lists and get their ideal choice. The recently-concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 trophy has given a clear picture to the franchises on which all players are in form.
We, at CricTracker, decided to make our own list of uncapped Indian players, who we feel have a good chance of getting a team on the auction day. We have made this list based on the performances in the T20 tournament recently and also their career stats.
So let’s us take a look at top 5 uncapped Indian players to watch out for in the IPL auction:
1. Kedar Devdhar
Kedar Devdhar has been performing well for the past few years for his domestic team, Baroda. In the recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament, we saw Devdhar being one of the best performers. He ended the tournament as the second-highest run-getter. In the eight innings in which he played, he managed 349 runs at an average of 69.80.
Through the tournament, he had a slightly mediocre strike rate of 113.68, but it has to be understood that he played in a few low-scoring matches as well. In addition to this, he has shown good temperament as well. He captained the Baroda team into the finals after Krunal Pandya had to leave the team midway due to a family loss.
Devdhar has been proving his worth as an opening batsman season after season for Baroda but hasn’t found much luck at the cash-rich league. He did play for now-defunct Deccan Chargers once way back in 2011. He played only one match during that season and never played again. This year he could just find some bidders at the auction.
2. Jalaj Saxena
Jalaj Saxena has been sort of a legend in the Indian domestic circles for the past few years. Each year, he has impressed everyone with his regular performances with both the bat and the ball. Even in the recent Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament, he picked 10 wickets from five matches at an average of 11.90.
Saxena has been picked by IPL teams multiple times before. He was with the Mumbai Indians side in 2013 and 2014. In 2015, he was with the Royal Challengers Bangalore and lastly, he was picked by Delhi Capitals in 2019. Unfortunately, the all-rounder could never get to play in a single IPL match so far.
Ahead of the 2021 IPL auction, he has created a lot of news for being ignored by the Indian selectors for a long time even after regular performances in domestic cricket. He even has a good track record in T20s. He has taken 59 wickets in as many matches, with an economy of 6.84.
3. Lukman Meriwala
Baroda surprised a few teams to enter the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament final this year. It happened on the back of some really strong performances in all three departments of the game. Lukman Meriwala was their top bowler during this time and his bowling was one of the major reasons why Baroda successfully beat teams which they weren’t expected to beat.
The left-arm fast bowler played eight matches during this tournament and picked up 15 wickets. His bowling average during the tournament was 13.57. The fact that he is a left-arm Indian pacer is one of the reasons why we feel he might attract a few bidders during the auction. In recent times, many teams have preferred having a left-arm pacer in their attack just for a little variety.
On top of this, Meriwala’s bowling record in T20s is incredible. He has played 44 matches so far and picked 72 wickets at an average of 14.54. He has an excellent economy of 6.72 along with a bowling strike rate of 12.9. These numbers are simply outstanding and can’t be ignored for too long by the IPL franchises.
4. Avi Barot
Avi Barot is a talented batsman of the Saurashtra cricket team. In the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament, he was someone who made everyone stop and take notice. It was due to two of his knocks. In a game against Goa, he scored 122 runs while against Vidarbha he missed his century by just seven runs.
In the tournament, he got a total of 283 runs in just five innings. Now, the interesting factor about his batting is his ability to strike the ball and score runs quickly. He scored all those runs in the tournament with a strike rate of 185. That is something which will interest a lot of franchisees who are looking for an Indian batsman with amazing ball-striking ability.
The 28-year-old has never been bought by any IPL team so far. But, after his exploits this season, he will surely attract some buyers. His overall record in T20 cricket is also quite good. In 20 innings, he has scored 717 runs at an average of 37.73 and a strike rate of 146.62. His knock against Goa also came to the attention of many because he got those 122 runs off just 53 balls.
5. Vishnu Solanki
Vishnu Solanki is the third player on this list from the Baroda team which ended being the runners-up of the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament. During the tournament, he attracted a lot of attention towards himself after he smashed 6, 4 and 6 off the last three balls in the quarterfinals to win the match for his side.
During that knock, he kept his cool until the very last over and just happened to play an MS Dhoni-type innings to seal a semi-final spot for his side. He can be a good option for a finisher for any team. He ended the tournament as the fifth-highest run-getter. In the eight innings which he played, he scored 267 runs at an average of 53.40. His strike rate was also impressive at 128.37.
He hasn’t been picked in any of the IPL auctions so far, but it seems that 2021 could just be the year for the 28-year-old. He has been one of the top performers for the Baroda team and might get some bidders on the auction day. His heroics in the quarter-final match has become his claim to fame and could also help him to land into an IPL side.
