Reports of rift between Indian captain Virat Kohli and limited-overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma have been doing the rounds of late. The development has come to the fore after India’s campaign in the 2019 World Cup where the team couldn’t progress beyond the semis, losing to New Zealand. It was also learned that there was a division in the team, one supporting Virat and the other in favour of Rohit.
Recently, Rohit also unfollowed Anushka Sharma, Virat’s wife, on Instagram. Previously, he also unfollowed Virat on the same social media platform. Talking about the issue, a source, close to the matters, termed it as ‘absolute nonsense’. Even former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir feels that the speculations are simply baseless and asked the BCCI to put an end to the issue.
“It’s not that we agree on everything”
In the meantime, Indian bowling coach Bharat Arun believes that the duo gets along well and Rohit turns to Kohli pretty often for discussing on various matters. As per Arun, the atmosphere in the dressing room is positive and everyone put forth their opinion.
“They get along well. It has to be seen to be believed. Rohit often runs up to Kohli to discuss things. They get along very well, share a great admiration for each other’s ability. Kohli led the side well, is maturing as a captain and it’s nice that he has Rohit for support. The spirit in the camp was wonderful throughout,” Arun was quoted as saying in Sportstar.
“It’s not that we agree on everything. We have our arguments and discussions on various aspects like the composition of the team and the strategy. Everyone voices his opinion. But at the end of the day, the other person’s view is respected and a collective decision is taken,” he added.
On this matter, the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) said that no reports of rift will be considered unless the players themselves speak about it. As far as Arun is concerned, he needs to re-apply for his position in Indian cricket’s support staff. The last date of application is July 30. Meanwhile, Virat is set to lead the national team in the Test, ODI and T20I series against the Windies, starting August 3.
