The outbreak of COVID-19 has put the world to a halt as the pandemic has taken over 1 lakh lives across the globe. The coronavirus outbreak has affected the lives of several individuals and the whole world has come to a standstill due to the current situation. Along with human existence, the pandemic has also taken a toll on the sporting scenario.
All sporting events have either been postponed or called off in the wake of the pandemic. After India Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended the country’s lockdown until May 3, the feasibility of IPL 2020 looks bleak. The much-awaited tournament has been postponed indefinitely and there’s no clarity over the league’s commencement.
In such critical situation, several reports have surfaced over the internet that Sri Lanka Cricket is ready to host this year’s IPL. SLC President Shammi Silva has expressed that India is likely to look into Sri Lanka’s proposal if the outbreak of coronavirus subsides in the neighbouring country. IPL 2020 can be shifted to a different country considering the anticipated losses of BCCI and stakeholders.
Muttiah Muralitharan doesn’t see it as a practical solution
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka legend Muttiah Muralitharan has also expressed his thoughts over the possibility of Sri Lanka hosting IPL 2020. According to the veteran, it may not be a reality. He does not consider it as a practical solution as the ace spinner feels that the outbreak should be eradicated from the entire world.
“It (the offer) is in talks but I don’t see it as a practical solution. The crisis should first be eradicated from the entire world, not only Sri Lanka,” said Muralitharan as quoted by bdcrictime.com
“The players coming from foreign countries need to be quarantined for a few days and vaccinated. It involves a big risk factor and all foreign players should agree to come here,” added the Sri Lanka legend.
The ace spinner also opined on matches being played behind closed doors in empty stadiums. “I see no point in playing matches without spectators. The game cannot survive without spectators. There is no charm then,” said Muralitharan.
