The World Cup-winning captain MS Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket on the evening of August 15, 2020 (Saturday). The legendary cricketer took to Instagram to bid a final adieu to the sport. He shared a video which showed a glimpse of all the highs and lows of his cricketing career.
The video had the iconic song “Mai Pal Do Pal Ka Shayar Hu” from Amitabh Bachchan’s “Kabhie Kabhie” playing in the background. Posting the video, MSD wrote, “Thanks a lot for ur love and support throughout. from 1929 hrs consider me as Retired.”
Dhoni had announced his retirement from the longest format of the game in December 2014 after representing India in 90 Tests and scoring 4,876 runs at an average of 38.09 while in 2017 he had handed over the limited-overs captaincy to Virat Kohli. His last outing for India was over a year ago during the semi-final match of World Cup 2019. Since then he made himself unavailable for selection.
Sania Mirza pays tribute to MS Dhoni
As soon as the news of Dhoni taking retirement went viral on social media, millions of fans from across the world congratulated the veteran on his brilliant career and accomplishments for Indian cricket. Many cricketers including the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ricky Ponting and many others wrote moving send-offs for the legend.
The Indian tennis star Sania Mirza also paid tribute to one of the best Indian captains. Along with terming MS as one of her all-time favourite athletes, she stated that it is an honor to be playing in the same era and for the same country as him (Dhoni).
“#DHONI what a legend you are .. one of my all time fav athletes and personalities on and off the field .. thank you for everything you have done and good luck with the future… it’s been an honor to be an athlete in the same era as you from the same country,” Mirza tweeted.

All being said, MS Dhoni would always be remembered as one of the most successful captains in the history of the Indian cricket for winning all the three ICC trophies be it 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy.
