India were knocked out of the World Cup in the semi-final for the second consecutive time when they lost to New Zealand in Manchester. The batsmen found themselves wanting in tough conditions as Matt Henry and Trent Boult ran through India’s top four in the first 10 overs. While many are criticising the Men in Blue for their shock exit, the former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir feels there is no need to panic for the team.
India did well to restrict the Kiwis to 239 after losing the toss and were expected to canter to the victory in the chase. But it was not to be for them and were reduced to 92/6 in the 32d over itself. It was only due to Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni who added 116 runs for the seventh wicket that the match went down the wire. However, Martin Guptill settled all the jangling nerves with a sensational direct hit to dismiss the finisher Dhoni.
Gautam Gambhir though reckons that India should look forward to the next series which is against the Windies and it would be stupidity to call for the players’ heads.
There is no need to change anything
“India will be disappointed by the way their campaign has ended. But to call for the heads of the players is being stupid. There is no need to change anything except re-look at Dhoni’s batting position come the next ODI series,” Gambhir wrote in his column for the Times of India.
Speaking about the likes of Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya, the 37-year-old felt the duo is precious for Indian cricket and should be mentored properly. Getting together at 24/4, both Pant and Pandya played out the tough period successfully before losing their patience while facing Mitchell Santner. Rather one felt that they should’ve played their natural game to the against the left-arm spinner.
“Trust guys like Pant and Pandya; they need mentoring as they are precocious talents,” the Delhi lad further wrote. As far as India’s next assignment is concerned, both the players are likely to travel to the Caribbean shores as the tour begins on August 3.
