Jasprit Bumrah has been one of the star performers for India in all the formats. The speedster was rested for the ODI and T20I series against the West Indies, but he played the Test series and was arguably the standout performer from either side. The Ahmedabad-born was the leading wicket-taker of the series, having picked up 13 wickets at a stupendous average of 9.23.
In the first match at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua, he picked up a five-wicket haul in the second innings that carved India’s 318-run victory. Bumrah went from strength to strength and unfolded more mayhem in the second Test at the Sabina Park, Kingston, Jamaica. The pacer shot away the Caribbean batting lineup with a thunderous six-wicket haul.
It fetched India with a massive 299-run lead after the first innings. Bumrah didn’t stop there and then smacked Darren Bravo on the helmet in the second innings. The blow turned out to be too nasty and Jermaine Blackwood was roped in as Bravo’s concussion substitute. For the first time, an international match was a witness to 12 batters making their way out in the same innings.
Virat and Bumrah animated after Blackwood’s wicket
Blackwood looked solid in the middle, having scored 38 runs off 72 balls with the help of four boundaries and one six. He was involved in a 61-run stand with Shamarh Brooks, who notched a half-century. However, it was Bumrah, who accounted for Blackwood’s wicket. Bumrah bowled a full-length ball outside the ball and the batsman made a half-push towards the leather.
The ball shaped a tad away from Jermaine and took the outside edge. Rishabh Pant didn’t have any trouble whatsoever in pouching the leather. The dismissal made the Indian fielders animated. Virat Kohli, the Indian skipper, put his fingers on the lips and also made a gesture, which asked the crowd to keep its mouth shut. Even Bumrah followed suit and made a similar gesture.
The wicket was an important one as the rest of the hosts’ batters could only add 51 runs. Five overs after Blackwood was dismissed, Kohli ran Brooks out. Jason Holder churned out a quickfire 39 off 35, but it was only to defy the inevitable- another resounding Indian triumph in Jamaica.
